It didn't help some firms saying only self isolate if you present "all symptoms". "Just a cough" and you should attend work. That has since changed.
There is an argument for this approach. I wonder when the retrospective testing is possible for immunity, if this is not a strategy we go down. For now I think it's been judged too dangerous, as care home workers, nurses & other front line staff could be leading to mass deaths, coming in contact with these people in the normal line of their work.
That middle ground failed because when people were asked to be sensible, a load of them selfishly treated it like an enforced holiday.
The case was there to also consider those people as vulnerable and to isolate them in the same way. Its a tricky one I know that and there is no right or wrong answer but I just know that evidence is there from previous economic crashes that it does result in thousands of deaths and that appears to be being ignored by most people
When the pubs do reopen I think they will be very busy at first, until people realise they have to catch up on their bills, then there will be a big slowdown
The only way to keep the vulnerable safe is for the rest of us to behave responsibly, the ‘middle ground’ was asking us to do that. Most of us did; but some clowns behaved like bellends forcing the govt to make us keep our distance.
I'm up ere in Bridlington, 11 bedroom hotel were open 4 Key Personell, had14 in last week I think weve 9 in next week, doing our bit x
Much much before that vast numbers of vulnerable people had completely ignored the expert's advice to isolate themselves.
Really daft question but what key personnel are travelling the country staying in hotels? I've seen many hotels in much less desirable places than brid are providing rooms for key workers but I had n idea so many were living in hotels day to day
I have eyes. Obviously I haven't seen everyone in the country but I know that my dad, my uncle, my brother in law and 3 people in the office at work are all considered vulnerable and all refused to isolate. I know that my neighbour and his wife are both vulnerable and refused to isolate. I could go on with a long list and that's just the people I know personally. I wasn't claiming that all vulnerable people ignored the advice but vast numbers did
Theres still a lot going on out there apparently. They eat sleep and self isolate, very weird carry on to be fair.
Economic crashes happen all the time. Its boom and bust as par for the course of capitalism. I'm sure the strategy of isolating the vulnerable groups was looked at and discarded for good reasons.
Problem we had is govt failed to act when prompted by China and then Italy . South Korea reacted and targeted incoming visitors and returnees almost immediately and stopped a great deal of potential carriers . We didn’t even stop flights from Wuhan till well into the spread.
In fairness though while we can say China and Italy did this and that there were also many countries doing exactly what we did. they didn't make it onto the news though because it wasn't as big a story. For example Sweden is still aiming for herd immunity
They do but the large scale economic disasters are relatively rare and the science and statistics do show that it causes many deaths. The life expectancy of every person dropped by 3 months when we went into recession for example. 10,000 people commited suicide due to it (think that was EU to be fair) etc. The strategy of isolating the vulnerable was adopted, it was tried and in large numbers they simply refused to comply so it had to be abandoned.
