Need to understand reasons why they feel like this - read up about it. Totally understandably that some feel like that - same reasons South Yorkshire was nicknamed Socialast Republic of South Yorkshire in the 80's. When state is knocking you down and breaking up communities the resentment grows.
TAA and Anthony Gordon looked happy enough last night. And as for the Scots and Welsh - they’ll all say they are desperate for Spain to win Sunday, but I’d say that a lot of them will secretly hope we win…
As I said above pubs were packed so someone here must be wanting them to win ... Not just down to the 80's - also a large Irish Welsh population have settled in Liverpool along with nations. Something not that prevalent in South Yorkshire in the 80's
Exactly this, as whole the North suffered under years of managed decline, but why the need to take this view and show ultra tribalism and anti English is pure stupidity. Like it not Liverpool is and always will be in England, there is no Republic of Liverpool it doesn't exist, the bank notes withdrawn from the cashpoint will say Bank of England on them regardless of your views of the faces on them.
Can't remember being a very large Irish/Welsh population around the area in Barnsley or Chinese immigrants - there's also a big factor. As I said look it up
The same can be said for Manchester which has an equally large Irish population with roots in Manc families, I don't see many of those banging the Republic of Manc drum. I see many many Scousers of a middle to older age supporting England, however its become fashionable amongst a younger scouse generation to just hate everything English regardless of any particular ties to ancestry
Liverpool has a mixed British heritage, but for some, I think the recent problem with England & the FA, is down to the mis-management of the Hilsborough tragedy, understandably. The Welsh & Scots problem goes back to Edward Longshanks trying to colonise everything & the Irish from Cromwell through Trevelian, to British occupation & partition. I sympathise with all of them & if I wasn’t English, I wouldn’t like us much either. But I’m wise enough to know, that wasn’t the common people who committed these crimes against the home nations & I still like to believe that football is a working class game..
There isn't mate. we are discussing scousers. Tribalism is rife whether it be a village or a town/county/country. I assumed when the op. Mentioned that group (he mentioned the welsh separately.) He was talking re the born and bred scousers. I have no doubt the vast majority of those will cheer England on. But the minority allus have the loudest voices. And hopefully egg on faces lol.
I'm 2 generations removed on mi dads side. Irish. I have no qualms Supporting england. Neither did my dad. It was great to see the wild celebrations at the India Pakistan game the other day in support of england. Cricket is another matter tbf. But more of Asian heritage, brandish the england tops more than ever. Todays populations should never have to answer to/or be punished for the actions of their forefathers, that's nonsense imho. But sadly as you say, relevant to some. As for England team and The FA. Not sure why they come into it. Maybe someone can explain, cos I thought the anger was aimed at the police authorities/government. And the scum newspaper. I have no more affinity over any other uk country. I wish em all equally well. After us of course.
Absolutely mate. I’m adopted (Christ knows where I’m from?), but my Mam was 3rd Gen London Irish. Her ancestors came over through the famine*, but I remember her Dad being a pure Londoner. I’m like you mate, all the home nations have their charming individual identities & I wish them all well. Until they play England.. * It wasn’t a famine, despite the potato blight. There was plenty of food. Stockpiled at Irish docks by that imperialist w*nker Trevelian, while people inland starved. It’s another shameful episode in our history which rightly, is not forgotten by the Irish..
