It'd be nice if the positive view of British history got a look in occasionally....

    Well,

there is a quote from a Hindu guy talking about they've not been happy for a long time, so it seems some Hindus feel that way at least.

I agree with you that too great a sensitivity is sometimes shown to certain religions, with predictable alienating results in some white British groups. I also agree that 'Islamo-fascists' are no lesser an evil than any other kind of fascist, and should be treated with the disdain they deserve. But do you think you can sometimes be overly ready to jump on the Muslim issue? Just a question...

RE: I'm not a Christian or a Royalist...

I am talking about the history etc of the award. Not you. The history etc that goes with the award of that cross. It is an honour to receive it because of its history etc and the fact it was established by the British monarchy. Why should it need changing, if it doesn't offend?

Jay - The fact I hadn't heard of it means absolutely nothing to my opinion now I have heard of it. I am aware that awards are given which originate from the British monarchy. And I would feel the same for any other award, as it would just be another part of the slow erosion of anything British/Christian etc (which are what I am so I feel the right to stand up for it).

Why are you bothered about the erosion of anything British or Christian in Trinadad and Tobago. Shouldn't they be allowed to decide what they want for themselves?

RE: Is it relevant in your opinion?

Who has really decided it needs updating? Why does it need updating? It is an award, an honour, because of what it is. So why does it need changing? It must be because it offends.

On a side note, the new medal looks like it should be going to an athlete.

    But..

the point is why should the Monarch be the one that hands it out these days? I don't consider them relevant....

All medals should be the size of a dustbin lid

    They're pointless otherwise.

Queen and country isn't that what you sign up for when you join up ?

...or would you rather a politician hand them out ?

RE: I'm not a Christian or a Royalist...

Fair point but its symbolic of the current attitude towards British/Christian. It is awarded under the name of our Queen (hence its honourable status) so is very British. It was an honour for Brian Lara, Garfield Sobers, V.S. Naipaul and many diplomats and politicians so why change it? Like I say, symbolic.

    Made me giggle that one

Imagine *Windy's posts if instead of getting rid - it was changed to the Allah Cross or Trinity Crescent (I used to live on the latter by the way!).

P.S. Do you reckon *Windy is C of E, R.C., baptist or some Christian cult?

Why not a national icon instead...

that has actually achieved summat, as opposed to a someone who just happened to be born into the right family?

I try not to think about it most of the time. There's something to go at pretty much every day for those who are so inclined.
