I think what people fail to remember is I said he needed to go. He made mistakes. He made **** loads. But he did some good things for us. I like to think I recognise both. Poor PPG. Made us plenty of £££ though - we got £5 million plus from players either he bought or developed. Not bad for 18 months.
Be interesting when the accounts come out for his tenure to see what wages were, and the year after (depending how income is allocated) what we recouped in fees. If his remit was to be the 4th worst team in the Championship with the worst budget.........
Drinkwater was never our player to lose. Anyone who attempts to build a team arund a player with a 24 hour release clause really is a berk. In my opinion of course!
There will always be a risk with any loan player that his parent club sells him. And unfortunately a loan deal is the only way we can secure a player of Drinkwater's quality. I can't see how that makes him a berk. Is Robins a berk too?
It's Conan's quest to stamp out and debunk any hint of mitigating circumstances for Keith Hill's time at Oakwell.
With a release clause that meant we might as well have not owned him (to clarify I absolutely understand why he had that clause and I'm not criticising Robins for building his team around him, just pointing out that the nature of football at our level means ownership of a player doesn't guarantee anything).
I've never met him but I know a lad who did meet him. Before they met he really liked him, thought he was a laugh and bit of a personality. After they met he thought he was a rude, arrogant, obnoxious ******. I thought he had communication issues and a bit of a chip on his shoulder but as I'd never met him I always gave him the benefit of the doubt but there seem to be too many people all saying the same thing for there not to be some truth in it.
He wasn't building a team around Drinkwater. He was - with the tools given to him - building a team to survive in the second tier. And had Butterfield not been crocked by lovely person features, we were about to flog him for over £2m to Newcastle. It was pretty much a done deal although Norwich, Everton and Villa were all interested. And let's be fair, Stephen Dawson was hailed as better than Drinkwater for a good few months last season. Perkins has regularly been lauded on here, even by people who now pretend they've never liked him. Golbourne, great bit of business. Mellis wasn't a bad replacement for Butterfield, on a free. And even though I know Stones isn't a fan of Hillcroft, it was Keith who did what he did with Jacob and gave him regular starts, bigged him up incessantly, in order to earn our club money. He's done that at Rochdale for years. He's no mug, despite what some will have you think. However, I do think he's a ****. I do accept he ****** up in many key aspects of management during his tenure. And I was glad to be shut of him. I just believe he's a much better manager than statistics during his time here might suggest.
Yep. As were many of Robins and Flitcroft's. But Keith's permanent signings, despite the derision heaped upon them and him, have largely been successful. I'm referring to him as a manager. You know full well how I feel about he and his best mate nowadays. It was like your own pet dog turning on and biting you. Gutted me. Or like the girl you fancied and thought was amazing, but then realised was a cheap slag who shagged your ugliest mate. And I know and understand your grievances too. But hey, you're allowed back now. You doing Yeovil? Or have you lost the urge after your time out?
Too many people saying the same thing? I haven't counted too many. I met him 3 or 4 times, and every time he was a genuinely nice bloke. These occasions were on the pitch just an hour or two before kick off and in the dressing room. He chatted for a good 5 minutes - and this was just before a game! He may have his unlikeable side, but I didn't see it, and I can only go on what I saw. A lot of people agree with my opinion. My point is, now Flicker has gone, why can't we just be grateful that he kept us up last season?? That's all.
Ownership of a player is a bit more security than a loan deal with a 24 hour release clause. Wasn't it Davey who arranged the deal?
It was nowt to do with a recall clause but a bid coming in for him. The result was the same, offer for Drinkwater from Leicester to Man Utd and he didn't play again, offer from Wolves to Barnsley for Hammill and he didn't play again
