You’ve kinda hit nail on head there…….’used to be acceptable that aren’t acceptable any more’ why’s that? Everyone’s offended by everything, someone says somet that the next person doesn’t like and you’re a racist or sexist or homophobic…….

The song has the line 'f**k the Pope and the IRA' in it. By any definition that's sectarian. It means nothing to Barnsley or the people of Barnsley. There's no sensible reason whatsoever why we should still be singing it. IMO it's pathetic and needs to stop. Just like the 'Ripper song'. Just pack it in and come up wi some new material.

It would if the club are forced to play behind closed doors for not taking action after they were threatened with it for not taking action previously especially when it was this specific song that caused the original fine

Is it really "hard" to not sing **** the pope though?

I completely get that those singing it probably don't mean anything by it and don't even think about the words at all, they're just singing something they've always heard mainly because it leads into we all hate Leeds scum. That's fair enough, but when they've been warned that the club they love is in real danger of bit being allowed to have fans at the game because of that song, and considering that it has absolutely no relevance to Barnsley FC anyway why would you not stop singing it?

It seems to me like your lass threatening to leave you if you keep squirting toothpaste down the toilet and you saying "I know there's no reason for me to do it but I've always done it so **** you darling". Surely it's just easier to say ok I won't do this one thing that you ask because it's a reasonable request and I'm not selfish.

Okay I’ve been bothered by that particular chant before, as someone of Irish heritage, and Catholic, regardless of your opinion of said religions you couldn’t get away with singing songs about Islam and al-quida to a Muslim footballer and rightly so. I have considered not going anymore when I’ve heard it. I used to sit next to a guy for years and one day he just started calling one of our ex-Celtic players at the time a “Catholic wnkr”…..I was like wtf?!?! “I’m Catholic”, he was absolutely shocked.

It baffles me, but then since the reformation there’s been deliberate propaganda against catholics which feeds nicely into English exceptionalism and stoked the fires of a general anti-European streak in English society. Sad.

If the club start banning folk for singing a song that has been sung for years in the Ponty end then all the good work of the past few games will be a waste. The majority of that singing section would be banned, and let’s face it the majority are kids.
Obviously I’m not condoning the song in any way, but what grinds my gears is the fact the very same song, amongst others more offensive are being chanted up & down the country, so why is it us who are getting into trouble with fines etc?

Because other clubs have taken action to stop it while we for years turned a blind eye to it, pretended we didn't know it was happening (yes we actually pretending we hadn't heard the song to the physio) said that Irish players should be used to it by now and generally acted like we didn't give a toss. Because of that we got big fines and now have to come down harder to essentially make up for previous errors.

Is it now just a regular thing that the announcer has to repeat the same warning at some random point in the game or does somebody actually report it, shocked, upset and offended every game?
Today I heard nothing yet the warning came.
