Another angle on this issue At work we are constantly seeking good electronic engineers and programmers. We struggle because the majority of good ones live and work elsewhere in the country. When they hear about a job vacancy they almost invariably back off when they hear it is in Barnsley - in fact the very mention of South Yorkshire is enough to put most good candidates off. This negative image (which most of them have without ever having been here) is the result of comments like the ones in this thread. It is all very well saying it is just a joke and we should laugh at it but it does have some very negative effects on local business and the local economy, creating a self perpetuating cycle which is difficult or almost impossible to break out of. It is interesting to note that this image changed slightly for the better in 1997 when we became famous on our promotion to the Premiership, but that soon faded. God knows I hope we win the FA cup!!!!
RE: Another angle on this issue But this is just the stereotypical 'grim up north' viewpoint that people from the home counties have about yorkshire and the north in general, and you will never remove that attitude about the North in general. One individual success story is Leeds, which reinvented itself as a 24 hour city about the time that it became a second home for financial institutions in the 90s, but how does a provincial town like Barnsley do the same?.
The grim up north factor... Is very real but the South Yorkshire and Barnsley factor is even worse, in my 25 years experience of trying to persuade people to live and work here. You are right about Leeds which has some areas much worse than anything around us, but people don't seem to hear about them. As I said the Premier league helped a lot and winning the cup will also help. The current building programme is also helping but the constant barrage of jokes in the media at our expense is overwhelming. Like most jokes which make fun of people, the first couple of times it may be funny but eventually it just gets on your nerves. As I said, I hope to God we win the bloody FA cup
RE: The grim up north factor... The thing about Barnsley folk though is that they tend to be proud of the fact that the town has its own special, different, reputation. For example, witness Patrick Cryne accepting the invitation to tuck into a barnsley Chop for breakfast at a Barnsley hotel, for coverage on Look Leeds, the day before the Chelsea game. Stereotyped comments were bouncing off the walls. And there's nothing wrong with being proud of the heritage of the town - but when people invite the stereotyping you know that the Barnsley factor, and the grim up north factor in general, will outlive us both. Going back to topic, that is why it is, in my opinion, so ridiculous for the OP to suggest that we boycott Radio Sheff next year because they allowed a derogitory comment about the town to air without comment - something to do with pissing and wind.
RE: The grim up north factor... you have to admit the town centre is pretty crap! I can't wait for the demolition darby. It could do with a Fred Dibneresk explosion!
Ooh! she's in a strop again. (Or is it the same one?)
You were by far the biggest bite (as I mentioned at the time, dummy) Have a trawl back through the board, you'll find it.
You'll have to outline which kinds of derogatory generalisations are acceptable and which aren't love. Your duplicity is a bit baffling to genuine people. i particularly liked your boast about taking "direct action" against those fascists who don't see things the way you do. Keep up the good work.

.

Proof if needed that the real dingles are form the manor. http://www.chavtowns.co.uk/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=412
RE: Ooh! she's in a strop again. (Or is it the same one?) Looking for a "bite". Why would you do that ? You weren't really though Don were you, you were flaunting what you saw as flattery, irresponsible given the context of the board at the time.
We're not all as desperate to impress as you are Kevin.
And you really don't know much about this board if you didn't recognise what I was up to there. Surprising as it plays such a big part in your life.

I'm from Worksop..... and I've seen comments on here about how crap the town is (most I agree with to be honest) so does that mean I shouldn't support Barnsley? No. It is just a bit of harmless fun. I also remember the Radio Sheffield guys laughing their heads off about being called dee dahs so you should take it as a bit of fun. Why are some on here so soft when it comes to things like this?
"they tried every angle to persuade the club to see sense" you havent got a clue what you are talking about. Why did you waste the 20 minutes it probably took to write that when you arent aware of the full facts? They offered us an equivalent of £6,500 for a full years coverage, when you remove advertising and hospitality. They paid Sheffield Wednesday £30,000 last year and they were in negotiations to more than double that. They refused to pay on a per game basis. Their attitude was "there's no one else who covers sport in the area, so like it or lump it". 'Belittle'? 'Seriously damages'? Get your facts straight.
Totally agree, and here's a story about it... In 2000 I got married in Barnsley to a German lass. Several of her family came over, most of which had never been to England before. Her brother took his wife and kids into Barnsley for a look round. On their return they were in a different room to me and didn't realise I was there. They were laughing their heads off about how crappy the town centre looks. They had no pre-conceived ideas and had never heard any of the stereotypical comments - they just saw it as it was. Needs flattening and starting again.
Is anyone still labouring under the illusion That Radio Sheffield and in particular the football heaven crew are not allowing their dispute with Gordon Shepherd to cloud their dealings with Barnsley FC and its supporters ?
Prior to the Chelsea game Radio Sheff went to Cudworth to 'gauge the mood' about the game. They spoke to a Chelsea fan, a Liverpool fan, an old bloke that didn't care and a woman that didn't go to matches but 'hoped Barnsley would win'.
I couldn't give a flying fck about name calling by other fans, that's banter, that's life, but the editorial decisions take the piss. If Sheff Wed were at Wembley they'd be sucking Brian Laws off and they certainly wouldn't be trawling round Wadsley Bridge for fans of other clubs to have a say.
That said, it needs someone to take this issue by the scruff of the neck and resolve it, because whilst ever we have to rely on Dearne FM's 'Pele' is it ? with all due respect to ask probing questions of Davey and for news about BFC then we might as well go and piss in the wind.

But in that... it's no different to provincial town centres up and down the country, North or South. There are plenty of places that have been destroyed by 60's abd 70's monstrosities like those in Tarn
I agree.. that in that example they should have found Barnsley Fans to talk to, but they have no access to official BFC sources, unless someone else in the BBC talks to them and they get the footage that way. As for asking probing questions of Davey, they don't want that, they don't like being asked difficult questions that suggest all is not rosy.
