    Coming to this thread a bit late - but my instinctive reaction was the same as yours, which shows a certain "longevity". Given that, you might be able to confirm my fading memory that Sir Tom pulled on the red shirt of Barnsley for the inaugural Oakwell floodlight game against Bolton Wanderers in the late 50s. I seem to remember he also scored a goal for us in that match ????????

    Bobby Charlton for me n all. Scored some unbelievable goals for England in crucial matches. The goals against Mexico and Portugal in '66 being prime examples. He was also England's leading goalscorer for 40+ years despite being a midfielder. Had also had a better strike rate than Rooney.
    Got to agree with your other choices as well and I'd add Lineker and Shearer to the list of top notch players.
