I think I rated him more because I thought we'd play more defensive football under him ( I'll be honest, I wasn't blown away by his appointment) but we had some great matches!
Wilson Ismael Stendel Heckingbottom Duff Ritchie Bassett Struber Robins Machin Gudjohnsen Hendrie Johnson Clarke (2nd time) Flitcroft Davey Parkin Hart Anderson Spackman Hodges Morais Schopp Asbaghi Hill (would be 19th on merit but penalised 6 places for being a cuunt)
If it’s based on achievements etc how is Stendel above PH? Both got promoted from L1, PH won a cup but also followed it up for the first half of the next season etc so surely that puts him above Stendel?
1.Wilson (nearly ruined his legacy with his 2nd stint) 2.Heckingbottom 3.Ismael 4.Stendal 5.Robins 6.Duff 7.Flitcroft 7.5. Struber 8.Ritchie 9.Davey 10.Hill Morais, Asbaghi, Schopp, LeeJay all bottom.
My top 10 1 Wilson 2 Hecky 3 Ismael 4 Stendel 5 Bassett 6 Robins 7 Ritchie 8 Duff 9 Davey 10 Thordarsson
Had an advantage of being involved with the club prior to being manager though. It was Stendel's first overseas appointment, and his lack of English must have made the job harder. .
He inherited a squad that had had a year together at Championship level, included Kieffer Moore, Alex Mowatt, Ethan Pinnock & then Cauley Woodrow. The fact we finished second was a disappointment v promotion being an achievement. Unbelievable squad for that level.
I’m glad I was born when I was, just to see Allan & Norman’s wonderful teams.. Great chart though mate, I’d probably have Hunter at 2, Clarke at 3. Paul Hart & Parkin rock bottom.
He also inherited a team at bottom of the league! For what it’s worth I would have Stendel above PH, not for achievemts but more circumstances when appointed. I was just questioning the achievement bit as IMO PH achieved more. There’s lots of sub stories and justifications for each, that’s the beauty of opinions non right or wrong.
We were bending over backwards to hang onto him, that summer. He was sacked before Christmas, if I remember right.?
Parachute payments weren't around then. Started in 2015 in their present format. There was a parachute scheme b4. But as far as I can tell started in 2006/7
On paper, Bassett had the best ever Barnsley side. But it was mainly put together by Danny & John Hendrie. Super John doesn’t get enough credit for that.? That was a spectacular joyride of a season & I loved every minute of it. We played like coked up teenagers with guns..
I loved that season. So many goals & some very high quality players. So near & yet so far with the Wembley defeat, which was much closer that the scoreline suggested...
