As a one off I think it's a terrific idea. The match is the epitome of a 'six pointer' and would be a huge boost for the players to have a big following in such an important game. The monies going into Bristol City's coffers is pitifully insignificant (especially when taking into account their financial mismanagement) set against the backing our team will receive. Other initiatives with regards to Oakwell need not be compromised by this type of gesture. I personally believe it would be far better to achieve victory over City with a bigger than usual following than ensuring the televisions are switched on in the concourses, for example. The club have already made a positive move by reducing the prices for the rest of this season's home matches and something along these lines would definitely add to that positivity.
A win is more valuable but will 1000 extra fans guarentee a win? I've been to many a game where there has been a large away following and we've come away disappointed. I've also been to away games where there has been only a few hundred away fans and we've won. Also if the extra fans does increase the likely hood of a win then why not try to increase this likelyhood at home where WE reap the financial reward as well as the advantage of more fans? And lastly I think that bigging the game up as a huge must win game will have a negative effect. Our team is well known for choking under pressure and i'm sure the management team would prefer to say they are looking at it as 'just another game' which will be completely undone if the club is then spending thousands to make it a massively important game. I don't think it is any more important than any other game anyway, it's only 3 points just like the next home game is.
Re: As a one off I don't see how the money going to Bristol is pitifully insignificant. A sell out of away fans would give them around 40,000 -50,000 which would equate to 10 grand a week till the end of the season to spend on a loan striker. I might be in the minority but I think that that is a hugely significant sum of money and opportunity to hand over to our relegation rivals. I also don't see the relevance of the TV comment as that requires a few seconds of time and not one penny whilst providing free travel to an away game costs thousands of pounds. Nobody suggested turning TV's on instead of giving bristol money. What was suggested was spending the same money on increasing the amount of supporters we have at a home game.
It's the one away game coming up that could do with a huge barnsley turn out given its potential significance and given the cost... It's highly unlikely to happen. Get free transport organised. Two waves. Those who want a beer or two before hand...those who though don't. Be like Charlton again.
Re: As a one off If brizzle wanted to sign a 10k a week player they'd sign one regardless of how many tarn turn up. You seen their books?
I was being as flippant as you Have a habit of being at times, with regards to the issue of the televisions. Their massive year on year losses and ingrained, perpetual financial mismanagement are a big reason as to why a larger than usual Barnsley following would be insignificant to their coffers. Increasing our own home attendances won't be done over night and would need projects being pushed over a longer period (winning games, cheaper prices, better match day experience). This positive idea of Conan's is something we might be able to achieve in the short term. First and foremost, we need to give ourselves every opportunity to maintain our place in the Championship. There are no guarantees, but I believe this could be a positive move.
Putting on free coach travel would be costly to the the club...going to far flung places like Bristol on the official coaches is normally around the £24 mark. So if 35 people pay £24, that's over £800 there which should cover the cost of fuel and the driver's wage's etc.. But putting on 10, 15, 20 free coaches to the game would cost a lot even if it was subsidised. And like other's have said, would a big away following get the win? We took 1,200 to Charlton this season and won 1 - 0 but only took 199 to Millwall and still managed a 2 - 1 win.
