I think the main problem is the value the cap has been set at. £2.5 million isn't a lot. AFC Wimbledon's wage bill was £4.7 million in 2018/19. Granted that figure includes non-playing staff, but I'd be surprised if they even made up 15/20% of that figure. Maybe it's secretly a short-term fix to safeguard clubs through corona, but to announce it a month before the season is due to start seems drastic. Whilst there's no caps in other divisions it'll surely push players away to rot in the top two divisions reserves, dip into non-league or try their chances abroad. Also, a team such as Sunderland, 20,000+ crowds, are capped to the same level as Accrington Stanley. I'm all for a 'level playing field', but that's just b*llocks.
Some of the more unscrupulous clubs will get round the salary cap. Years ago in the non leagues, it was not unusual to get back to the changing room to find that one or two of the better players who had played at full league level, would have a wad of notes tucked into a sock which had then been placed inside their shoes. If a club wants to,'there's a whole host of ways of bunging a player a few extra quid.
Sunderland a team languishing in the 1st division have managed that by themselves creating massive debts unable to pay wages and break even cos of massive contracts. Don’t forget the parachute payments they got to soften the blow. You reap what you sow. Players not leaving cos no one will pay em equal or more. Yes I agree to a degree it may seem a little unfair given the of income of the 2 clubs. But it was quite obvious the old rule of 60% of turnover was easier to abuse. They will still be able to attract the better players given the tradition/facilities and bigger clout in the transfer market. Unless I’ve missed summat about transfer fees in the structure. I’ve also said it before 1 player was on £8000 a week at Barnsley. Ended up as a last resort on £800 a week at his next club. Lots of players are going to be in that position. Take it or leave it. Yes lots will probably go abroad. Understandable. But the gravy train has to be stopped somehow. Some players in league 1 on bigger salaries than some players in top leagues in Europe. £2.5m with a squad of 20. average £125k around 4.5x average salary in the country. 2.5 x a doctor.
I don’t object to the principal of a salary cap, I’m not comfortable with the levels set, particularly those proposed for the championship, whilst I believe we could easily live a mid table existence with that budget, the gulf between the budget at the top and bottom will mean it’s the same teams who’ll yo-yo from to the premiership and Likewise down to L1.
£18m ?. We won’t have that sort of budget. guessing £10/11m ( till covid stops playing havoc with finances) . But the supposed bigger clubs will have that as a limit. ( Got to be fairer.) Or pay fines to go over. Or have I misunderstood?.
I’d imagined going over would result in more than a fine (or there’s really no point). a fair proportion of Champ clubs can easily live within the budget, but the parachute clubs will be working with budgets close to £100m and newly promoted clubs will be full of much cheaper players and a budget of <£5m. that’ll surely lead to the same teams yo yoing at both ends of the table.
