Also, I'd recommend that anybody who likes the TV show check out the first two audiobooks - Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers and Better Than Life. They're novels which pretty much run the bones of some of the episode plots with a lot more fleshing out, but Chris Barrie does the narration and it's spectacular. Freely available on YouTube.

The novels went a bit downhill after that due to Doug Naylor and Rob Grant parting ways (just as the TV show did), but I also think Backwards is worth a read/listen. Never really got on with Last Human.

 

I love the TV show, which is how I got into it as a young lad. But you’re right. The books are something else. Better Than Life is outstanding.

I think they’ve tried rebooting it too often over the years when it was fine where it was. A classic. Just leave it be.

 

Series 7 for me was a bit of a disaster, due to Chris Barrie leaving to pursue other options. Chloe Anett can't be faulted with the little she had to work with, but I got bored with her and the Kochanski stuff.
For me it struggled to get back to its best for a few years, but I think it eventually happened with the re-booted Series 10 & 11.

 

Very much agree with this. I was trying to explain the beginning of Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers to someone the other day, about Lister being on Mimas as a taxi driver when he is approached by God…

It's what I put on when I just want a bit of comfort, so I've listened to it so much that the whole thing is imprinted on my memory! The whole BTL game thing makes a lot more sense when you read it as well, having been introduced to his partner Josie. Just really makes it clear how good the whole concept was in terms of sci-fi, as well as comedy.

Yeah better than life is getting scarily real at the moment…. The science behind the comedy was very clever.
