I remember him being amazing on loan, and then as soon as we signed him he never tried a leg. I thought he banged a few long-range ones in during his loan spell but that was as good as it got for him. I do remember being pleasantly surprised when we were able to sign him permanently.
Marlon Harewood. Lets be honest, 2 goals in 32 league games for a striker is appalling. But he always put a shift in in that legendary run to stay up in 2013, and I loved singing the song he was part of with Jason Scotland the second half of that season.
Yes agree to an extent. Thought he was overrated on loan imo. But with you 100% on the fact he never even put in the effort Once signed permanent. Tosh imo
Gary Jones. Read all the good reports about his work ethic and leadership. Was looking forward to him coming. Sideways only headless chicken, and blamed everyone bar himself when he screwed up even to the extent if he was nearest to the ball he’d look to the nearest player (50yds away) and pass the blame. Tosh.
So much nostalgia in this thread! For me it has to be Dale Jennings, really hoped we would have got him when he was at Tranmere before he went to Bayern, but was over moon when he came to us after leaving Germany. The lad had so much talent but just seemed to want to spend all his time in gym bulking up so he had no stamina and most of time looked like he couldnt be bothered.
I always hoped Paul McGugan would turn out a gem after coming from Celtic, he seemed to have the physique if not the technique. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/fa_cup/7276231.stm
Ross Turnbull and Keith Treacey were exciting signings relative to our division that flopped. You could add James Bailey and Leroy Lita to that list.
I thought Ross Turnbull was unlucky injuring his back. Keith Treacey was a good player who suffered from depression and piled weight on. He showed glimpses of the player he should have been but turned out to be a flop. James Bailey complimented Hourihane in the central midfield but was made of glass. Took some tidy touches and broke up play well. Leroy Lita was a poacher and we didn't play to his strengths. Started the season well and then was dropped. I'm sure he'd have scored some goals had he played more.
Brian "Sick note" McCord, he looked a world beater when he came on loan at the start of the 1990/91 season but went AWOL as soon as he signed a contract...
Bit difficult to answer the thread title directly Fonzie . If someone was a flop. ( which is based on others opinions of what they believe ) How would you then like em. I know what I mean if you don’t. . I thought Gary Jones was a flop but that may only be my opinion. Didn’t like him but thought I would. Has anyone got the full list of flops. ( I may say I liked em. But I can’t remember one player who I personally thought flopped. but then like em) Totally confused missen nar. If you read the op’s comment I think it’s a little clearer than the title.
Haha I get your point. Maybe it should be called "Reds players who were completely garbage, but for some weird reason you seem to like them". And I'd still say Paddy.
Lita couldn’t run with us. I’d be interested to see stats for how little distance he covered. He was apparently 28 when he joined us but looked 10 years older. Don’t know if it was his body letting him down or laziness but he lost the pace he once had at a very young age
Odejayi anyone? I thought he was always played out of position - that is he was actually on the pitch for more than the last 5 minutes of the game. I thought he was the perfect player for Barnsley becuase we always concede in the last 5 minutes plus injury time. With him on the pitch, his strength and pace - and his ablity to get into 1 on 1's with keepers he was perfect for bringing on with 5 minutes to go to terrify the defence and keep the pressure off us. Any more than 5 minutes and they'd work out he was **** - but for five minutes he would be confusing enough to get us over the finish line. Mike Sheron. I don't think he was a flop - a lot of people thought he was sh!te. He as always three moves in the chess game further forwards than the rest of teh team - which is why when they passed to him he wasn't there - he was at home playing chess. It was the other 10 that were **** not him. Perhaps he should have adapted. I also loved Dominic Werling and of course Paddy McCourt. Even though for 88 minutes per game they were also **** - it was the two minutes of the game they actually were awake for that were worth talking about on the way home from the match.
Paul Hayes. I don't know if he flopped as such but he didn't do as well as I'd hoped and wasn't rated by many. He had a nice touch and scored the occasional great goal.
