Maybe one of those pop up stalls they have in the Alhambra? Don't think the actual shop was that busy. Then again I reckon the chances of opening one are slim to nil as the club doesn't actually own the shop do they now?
Not saying it wouldn't be a good idea, cause it would - but I don't think it's quite so simple. They'd need a link up to the ticket system at Oakwell, which whilst not impossible does add another cost burden.
It's a prime example of how the club has been lacking any direction, leadership or dare I say it, interest?, at the top and I don't mean Don Rowing who could only work with the budget that he was given. Simple common sense says that if there was enough money in the club shop for the club to outsource it for some cash and a third party to make money too then there was more money to be made by cutting out the third party. Same goes for the catering, if there's enough money to be made by Lindleys that they can afford to pay us for the privilage of using our outlets then there was more money to be made by us cutting them out. It was just easier and lazier to sign it over to someone else.
Hopefully we won't outsource this kind of thing again and I assume the club won't want to after the contracts run out. It's a great shame the club couldn't capitalise more on the 125 anniversary. I don't really recall seeing anything that exciting really. Big shame. No doubt they thought that a company like Nike would actually improve the club shop so I don't think the club are to blame.
I think the main problem with the Nike thing is that they didn't actually do a deal with Nike. They simply did a deal with a company who sell Nike stuff.
I think the club needs a presence in town, but not a shop selling shirts, hoping that someone might wander in. Oakwell needs to be the hub of the town and any presence in the town centre should be with there for the sole purpose of driving footfall to the club. So that means engagement and awareness in town with the objective of generating interest in the club and Oakwell as a focal point for the town.
it would be a great incentive for newbies and oldies alike, even if they dont use the alhambra then surely there are more empty bases in the town centre that could be used, the club doesnt have to go over the top to start with but start basics and build from there, i wouldnt be surprised if this is already being thought about considering the recent appointments to the board and "project barnsley" as flicker calls it
I see. I was under the impression that JustSport were a part of Nike, or at least part run by them. No wonder it's *****
Outsourcing catering makes sense, particularly for only 23 or so events per year; outsourcing the club shop doesn't, though maybe they could do a JV with Blackford Sports or Keegan's for a store in town - though selling tickets also is a must.
I can't imagine it makes financial sense to have a shop in town. I remember been dragged to town by my Mum in the school holidays in the late 90's when we were doing well & had higher attendances & the shop was nearly always empty so can't imagine it doing any better nowadays. We live in a town where there seems to be more Man Utd fans than Barnsley fans as well as a lot of Leeds & Wednesday fans & I just can;t see it making a profit.
That's why I suggested it being in conjunction with an existing sports shop. Reds fans would probably buy other sports items and general sports fans might buy BFC related items. It would also enhance the "community" and 2shop local2 image.
There is no reason why a well run franchise shouldn't make money for the club (compared to running it badly "in house").
