RE: Right

It's your opinion, and your not a lovely person...

It's only 20th of June, who says we arent gonna sign a "box office" player?

Ritchie wants to sign him, he's young so I'm gonna give him a chance...

    Fast-shot Eddie.

England U19s forward Eddie Johnson

READ ALOUD

Fast-shot Eddie

Friday, 22 November 2002.

England Under 19s forward Eddie Johnson followed the lead of David Platt and Robbie Savage by moving between Manchester United and Crewe to improve his first team opportunities, only he left Gresty Road for Old Trafford. He talks to TheFA.com...

Eddie Johnson's career has followed an unusual path so far. Platt and Savage both started out at United and then went to Crewe because their opportunities were limited at Old Trafford. But Johnson has done it the other way round.

In the shadow of England under-20 star Dean Ashton at Gresty Road, he was unhappy at Crewe so he left - and ended up at United.

"I was at Crewe until I was 15 and United signed me soon after my contract there finished," reveals the Chester-born poacher.

"I think I needed a change, Dean was pushing on and it was hard for me to follow. But it worked out well, I went out to United and it's been a good move.

[IMG]"I've had a few games in the reserves this season, playing with people like Diego Forlan which has been a good experience. Brian McClair and Mike Phelan at the club are always telling the young players to keep pushing and working hard, because it is always hard at United to break into the first-team squad. Particularly for me with Ruud van Nistelrooy and Ole Solskjaer around.

"A couple of United lads Danny Webber and Jimmy Davis have gone on loan to regular football. Maybe the same will happen to me although it might be another year or so. I will be 19 then and really ready."

Like fellow Chester-born striker Michael Owen, Johnson grew up an Everton fan. But in terms of playing style, he admits he follows Alan Shearer and Patrik Kluivert more closely.

"I am quite strong, and like to hold the ball up and make runs inside. I do see myself as a goalscorer though. Shearer is someone I definitely look up to and try to emulate."

The Red Devils' young hotshot is a regular fixture in Stuart Baxter's Under 19 side and has created a reputation as a fast starter. He scored against Macedonia after 40 seconds and the team won 3-0. Three days later he struck within 50 seconds and Moldova were downed 9-0. The message is clear: Don't turn up late to see England Under 19s. With Johnson about, you may miss something!

"I must be quite a quick starter," smiles the 18-year-old Manchester United striker. "It's easier for the team if you get off to a good start. And the nice thing is in both games we have gone to score more.

"The goal against Macedonia was a header and the Moldovan one was a good team goal. I think it was Jerome Watt who slid it across, I took it on my right and then hit it with my left into the far corner."

No need to worry about the timing of his goals for Manchester United in the future, his manager is renowned for his strict time-keeping during matches!

He should be given a chance of course, however

I can't see us signing another forward if we get this lad. We've already got Nardiello, Hayes, Wright and Richards and we've been told we'll be signing Coulson. If we also get Eddie Johnson then that'll be six strikers, so I just can't see us getting another. We've plenty of youth in the team as it is. I was led to believe we'd be signing experience and quality rather than quantity. I don't see how a young striker still finding his feet fits into that category.
