Despite being the first referee in over 18 months to give us a penalty at home, I didn't think much of Mr Mather's performance. Gave fewer cards than he has so far this season, and it was his first league 1 game of the season where he hasn't produced at least 2 red cards.
I wasn't there so can't vote but I'd give him 10 for disobeying EFL refereeing directives and awarding us a penalty.
I thought he did OK (and there was some chat along similar lines in the seats around me). The only thing I really disagreed with was the booking for Styles, but otherwise he was largely anonymous in the game, which is the sign of a decent refereeing performance.
I thought he was better than average this season. Early and correct booking of Dunkley set the tone a bit which meant we weren't subject to the same tactics as they used last season. Booking of Styles a tad harsh but he was late and again once players realised that flying in got a card it meant the rest of the game was played without a bad tackle. I didn't think he got any major decisions wrong - under current rules our penalty was correctly awarded though we have had worse ignored by other refs, I didn't think the double tuck with Pike from Cotter when he had lost the ball was a pen either so no complaints there. He was much better than I feared having seen his record pre match, solid 7/10 from me
A steady 6 for me but maybe deserved more. His correct early yellow for Dunkley led to an assist for our second goal with the defender not taking out the flying Cole when he would have fouled him otherwise.
I didn't really notice him apart from the penalty and Styles booking which is not a bad thing I suppose, 7 from me
When he booked Dunkley I said “we’re getting a penalty tonight”. It was sarcastic of course! Gone for 7. I thought the Styles booking was harsh and I believe he’s now suspended for Saturday. That’s a shame if so because I thought he played well last night and kept finding space in a pretty cramped area of the pitch.
I’ve given a massive 8. I thought he set the tone with early booking of their player and then proceeded to be consistent for both sides. Of course he made a couple of mistakes but they were honest mistakes and weren’t biggies. I think evidence of his decent performance is in the match day thread, basically he wasn’t the talk of every other post
I thought that the early booking was an excellent decision, and one that not all refs would have given. The penalty was correct under current rules, but I think we got away with one at the other end in the build up to our second goal as De Gevigney was quite physical with their attacker. It would have been a harsh decision, but I've seen penalties given for less, against us. So the key marginals definitely went in our favour, but besides that he controlled the game well and tried to play advantage if he could. The only big decision I would question is when Sraha fell over and cut out a through ball with his hand. If the ref gives a foul, it has to be a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity. Perhaps with the game over as a contest he decided he didn't want to go brandishing red cards for what was probably accidental, but if it had been a closer match I'd have been far more upset about it. Overall a solid 7, although I'd probably not be saying that if I supported Shrewsbury.
Got on top of Shrewsbury by correctly booking Dunkley early doors. Set the tone to make sure they didn’t try and kick us off the field. Didn’t agree with Styles’ booking but I’ve seen worse decisions. He awarded the penalty - which to be fair I don’t think should be deemed handball, but which he was right to award under the current interpretation of the law, and he wasn’t overly noticeable after that. More than competent, no major issues. 7/10.
From my view in ESL I thought Styles clearly got to the ball first but his momentum saw him collide with player. I did not see it as a foul never mind a booking and looking at Styles I don't think he did either.
