On a practical level - how difficult was it getting accepted onto your course as a 'mature' student - and have you had to fund it all yourself ?

That's some interesting stuff for sure. What's the most exciting/interesting/special thing that you've found?

    You evil swine!

    :D:D
A sliver of worked flint was the only artefact worthy of note, along with some late medieval pottery. The rest of the time was spent digging up Iron Age field boundaries. However, someone else on the dig discovered a Neolithic hand axe. As we all work as a team, I'm claiming that, too!:D
The words 'clutch' & 'straws' leap to mind!!

As I already have a degree

I was accepted on the course. But, because of that, the downside is I have to fund it all myself.

    For me, Tomi,

It would be the Iron Age pottery last year. However, I get just as much a thrill from investigating & understanding the ancient landscape our ancestors worked and lived on. To me, this is more interesting than hunting for hidden treasure hordes. I accept this type of work isn't everyone's cup of tea and I know I'm a boring, old git when I go on and on about the subject!:D

What job you looking at after ? Museums or field work ?

I'll think of some more questions in a bit.

    Well

For the next few months, I'll be spending most of my time studying. The only time I've spent in York, so far, was to do exams. I'm hoping I'll be able to find employment in fieldwork (for a council, or university for example). If not, then I'll explore the possibility of museum work. Were no such work to be available, I may stay on and try to get my Master's. After thirty odd years in the steel industry, this is brilliant for me. I'm acutely aware how fortunate I am to be doing something I love and don't intend to waste this opportunity.

    Thank you

I know this is boring, but I have two trowels (pointing & leaf).

You'll be telling Tony Robinson what the situation is in no time.

Genuinely admire you for doing it.

I'd call that bottom one a small tool

Or a 'small boy' as my mate once called it, so that's been its name ever since.

    It's used for

Delicate work. For example, excavating a fragile artefact, or, perhaps, human remains.

    Professor Lil?

Now you know why I'm so arrogant!
Cheers mate, for your kind comments. But I know how lucky I am to be doing this.

    Re: Thank you

I genuinely find that fascinating, but you knew I would! Would you like to see my tools? Okay, good! P1120082.jpg IMG_4737.JPG IMG_4740.JPG
And here's one I made earlier!

Best thing about my job is the stuff. All the various conservation materials and kit, I'm obsessed with it all - it's practically a fetish.:)
