Many of my early visits to Oakwell were to see Central League games, played on Saturday afternoon in front of crowds of 3-4000. This began for me at the very beginning of the 1960s, and one game I particularly remember was against Liverpool. A buzz in the crowd preceded the appearance of a winger called Billy Liddell, who meant nothing to me aged 8 but who I later learned was a Scottish international who played over 500 first team games for the scousers.
