Right..... I'm going to be contraversial, maybe.

    RE: Cobblers

It's money that could and shoulod have been spent on the team. People go to watch the team, not admire the facilities. I'd sit on broken glass if we had a team worth watching.

I think if we were putting broken glass on the terraces

    I'd probably stand up.

    Again a bit unfair

Redfearn was sold before Hendrie was appointed.
He brought Hignett in who could be seen as a reasonable replacement.

The rot started with Sheron and Dyer in for Ward, Fjortoft and Liddell out.
Ward we had no choice with really - we did good business getting so much for him.  If we had been more astute with replacements than Sheron and Dyer, the North Stand would have been a much better investment as it would have been full most weeks.

    But

The league rules decreed that we HAD to spend on facilities.
You may be willing to sit on broken glass but the fact was we were given 3 years following the Taylor report to convert to all seater or forfeit our right to play in the top two divisions.

Not sure. I know Taylor came into it somewhere, but it seems we went OTT. Could be wrong.

Exactly. 4 years before we were promoted in 96-97.
Yet some on here think we'd be in better nick if we'd either ignored league rules or put seats on the old structures  of the Brewery and Pnnty.

i think that jay is referring more to the fact

that we built a new north stand which had just had seats built in it. The other two stands were built before we went into the premiership so I dont see how money from them could have been spent on players anyway.

I have thought about the north stand thing and perhaps in hindsight the money should have been spent on players but in the long run that stand could make the difference between us surviving in the championship (if we ever get back there) or us coming straight back down.

    Rubbish ...

It was the 'Steven Taylor Report'.
It was all about knocking the smoke out of cheap bints round the back of Tivoli's.

    You lot know **** all.

    I disagree

It went wrong later than that.

    Ward + Fjortoft + Liddell = Sheron + Dyer + North Stand

THAT was the equation that didn't balance!!

Ward + Fjortoft = Liddell + Shipperley (or available equivalent of similar quality) + North Stand

Would have given us a team with a shot at immediate bounceback and a full stand split between home and away fans week in week out.

I don't think sticking seats on the old Brewery/Ponty would have been all that more effective...forward thinking by the then board...dragged the club into 20th Century...what about Bolton? They built anew stadium and still have managed to become a semi-permanent top flight side...the difference...decent manager who signed decent players

    You've certainly got a point

But you'd have to question if a stand the size of the North Stand complete with new changing rooms and the finances such a venture cost was exactly what was required. Similarly the money spent on the academy structures. As good as these structures look, and in my opinion our stadium and facilities are first class and look beautiful, how have they helped us? We've got plenty of academy lads in the first team squad, but are they any better than what we could have picked up on free transfers? And isn't it true that the present board were discussing if the continued academy status was even viable?

We spent a hell of a lot of money on the facilities at Oakwell. But during that time we have fallen down the divisions and gone into administration. Was it worth it?

    Was it worth it?

    Yes.

And don't threaten me again with your questions.

I think we should build a stand alongside Millmoor & use that.

the acadamy isnt just for young players

the facilities that were built as part of the acadamy train the first team do. as do all the coaches that were employed to run the acadamy.

There is no doubt in my mind that the amazing training setup and stadium helps in signing better players (though i do realise that by choosing the wrong manager over and over this has meant no decent players have been signed)

RE: You've certainly got a point

I've addressed my feelings on the North Stand elsewhere in this thread.
    The academy? Difficult one.
Yes it has been a bad investment - cost lots to build, lots to run and has produced nothing worthy of "paying its way"

But this argument is more complex becuase one thing not yet mentioned in this thread regarding our current plight is the collapse of ITV Digital and subsequent collapse of the transfer market outside of the Premiership.

The players now moving round on free transfers are the sort of players that went for half a million in Spackman's day.  At the time the academy was built, we could have expected the likes of Morgan and Kay actually be worth money.
