More topical , he was a yard offside you hear ! eh ? Builders yards come in all shapes and sizes , looked like a marginal human foot to me. I also fill my car/bike tyres up to xx psi , I haven't visit a bar in quite a while
This thread shows just what a confused nation we are. The reality is we need, and use, both, and have adopted that as being 'the English way'. I suspect most people will drive miles to see the reds but wouldn't enjoy watching the 440yards final in the Olympics. Height and weight tend to be measured in the 'old way' as does when you're ordering a drink at the bar, but few get pints of Milk any longer. All a bit bonkers but very 'English'.
We should at least be teaching up to 16 times table for hexadecimal - better still in Hexadecimal itself "9 + 1 = A", "9 + 9 = 12", etc so you 2 times table becomes 2 x 2 = 4 2 x 4 = 8 2 x 8 = 10 2 x 10 = 20 2 x 20 = 40 2 x 40 = 80 2 x 80 = 100 Wonderful
Look, Brexit is Brexit, right? Boris got it done!! We all need to go back to miles, yards, feet & inches, as well as all those right easy fraction sizes like 15/64ths and 2/3 of an ounce All those easy to understand metric units of measurement need stopping at the borders, along with all that other EU junk like Brussels Sprouts and Spaghetti. Next thing we'll all be talking French and wearing striped jerseys, for goodness sake, just how long IS a gas metre anyway? Yours imperiously Jacob Rees Mogg
must admit Im fairly mixed up between the systems and switch between the 2 quite arbitrarily I think in yards when playing golf, miles when measuring distance by road or for walks and feet when thinking of height gained in walks. but go to France and I have no problem switching to km and metres (except for playing golf I have to convert) I know my height in Feet and weight in KG. all work drawings are in metric and I mix and match when measuring at home. Recipies are a mixture of units. as an aside why do car wheels and tyres measure the wheel diameter in inches but the width in mm
Growing up in the late 70s - 80s has really screwed my measurements, I can't really understand any of it properly kg/lb/km/miles/feet/metres its just too confusing.
This wouldn't work either. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ByxL7cQKB4Q&ved=2ahUKEwimgNyqna7xAhVOD2MBHWDDA1QQuAIwEHoECDcQBQ&usg=AOvVaw35SbVtVe4JkOetbjiL-L4Q
What about temperature? I think of cold temperatures in Celsius - I.e. it is freezing when its 0c not 32f. But I think of hot temperatures in Fahrenheit. 80f sounds much hotter than 27c Sure I am not alone?
After twelve years here I'm pretty much converted... except trying to work out what xx litres per 100km is in miles per gallon does my head in. Not only are there two conversions to do it has to be flipped as well. Do you know what they call the six yard box in Europe? The Goal Box Royale!
Metric for science and industry, imperial for everyday life. Can switch from one to t'other. The Yanks can't though, I think they sent a satellite crashing into a Mars because they got their metric and imperial mixed up. https://www.simscale.com/blog/2017/12/nasa-mars-climate-orbiter-metric/
Cricket pitch ...22 yards long. Football ... penalty area 18 yards, penalty spot 12 yards, any others? How are the measurements done abroad, 16.4592m and 10.9728m? Sounds a bit daft all round.
Imperial v metric is always interesting. To me at least. I use both and sometimes even interchange in the same situation. Other things I’d exclusively use one or the other. I would never think of a longer distance in km, only miles. The road signs and speed limits are all based on imperial measurements. It would cost billions to change and nobody wants to. I can interchange between ounces and grams when weighing out stuff for recipes etc, but only really weigh myself in stones and lbs. Tend to weigh out flour and sugar etc in ounces - but buy it in grams and kilos. I only know my height in feet and inches (but could convert it easily enough). I look at fuel consumption in mpg, but have never considered how many gallons of fuel I’m buying as it is always litres. I’ll buy beer in pints at a bar but drinks are bought in litres (or ml) in any other situation. Milk is an interesting one. I tend to get filtered milk, cravendale or similar otherwise it goes off in our house. That is in litres. However, the Mrs is on some health kick and supping milk like it’s going out of fashion so we’re on normal milk for a bit. Asda still sell normal fresh milk in bottles of 2, 4 and 6 pints - though the nutritional info is per 100ml! I’ve no idea how much a hectare is - though in fairness I’ve little more idea how big an acre is. I can picture both a square metre and a square yard. Temperature wise I’ve always used centigrade/Celsius rather than Fahrenheit. Don’t start me on Kelvin, which to my mind is the most pointless thing anyone ever did. I’m yet to join the mile high club but if I did we’d likely be at about 35,000 feet at cruising altitude (which is actually more like 6 or 7 miles!), that all being imperial.
