Up there with Richie Benaud as one of the very best sports commentators of my time. Like Benaud, he didn't state the obvious which you could see, but commented on the deeper, or marginal aspects of what was going on. I went to 'An Evening with Peter Alliss' seemingly not that long ago and he was just as good as on tv. Such memorable and humorous lines. I recall an amazing long-distance putt racing into the hole and Alliss' comment, 'that went in like a rat up a drainpipe.' Where did he get all those similies and metaphors from? Genius, truly. RIP great man.
I saw Alliss regularly down at Old Thorns GC. His fun and wit did not extend into his private life that’s for sure. To put it as respectfully as possible.
