Did Viv Anderson get sacked from Barnsley and be replaced on a caretaker basis by someone who had been a full time coach for 11 weeks, who then won one in six games and was handed the job full time?
Tbf, Hemsworth was personal and abusive towards Hassell's family. All ST is doing is saying that Hourihane appears completely out of his depth on a professional level - so far.
No Vivian ****** off to be Robbo's lap dog at 'boro. My question was more to do with your angle at Hourihane escaping criticism despite being part of and coaching the exact same squad that have performed so poorly over the last 5 months or so. Wilson was player coach under Vivian, so was directly involved in a squad that only just avoided the drop , 12 months later that very same squad just missed out on the play offs...........sithi
To be fair Andy we could just as easily say ‘he likes Hourihane. Great. We get it.’ to you. Let’s be honest; you do come across as the founding and leading member of the Conor Hourihane appreciation society. ST might be going a bit strong yeah, but he’s not wrong that CH is being sheltered from blame and responsibility somewhat bizarrely; given he’s been here all season and has managed one win and six points in nine games as head coach. I’m not calling for his head. Give him the summer and his input to sort the squad and see where we go. I understand the limitations of what he’s working with now. But I don’t think he should be as immune as he seemingly is, I find it bizarre - almost as bizarre as giving him the permanent gig after one performance and result. He’s shown absolutely nothing. It is abundantly clear that he was the manager in waiting pretty much all along, which adds even more fuel to the argument that Clarke was shabbily treated. He will have known his replacement was at the club already. Hardly conducive to inspiring better performance. I got him being given it to the end of the season. That was logical. There is absolutely no logic in him being made permanent when he was. It defies all rational thought given how diabolical his results and a lot of the performances have been. But he’s in the role and there’s no point changing that now. Let’s hope it works out.
Are you actually using that argument in favour of Hourihane’s appointment? Wilson turned the fortunes of the team around with a fair bit of the same squad. In fact if I recall correctly it was exactly the same squad other than bringing back Malcolm Shotton who was about ninety years old by that point. He got us to sixth in the league which was only outside the playoffs as it was the year four came down and only two went up to get the premier league down to 20 teams. If Hourihane went into next season with the same squad like Wilson did - one which didn’t finish anywhere near as close to relegation as the one Wilson inherited - what do you think he’d achieve? Flirt with the playoffs? Don’t make me laugh. He’s already had a nine game audition with that squad. He got one win and six points. Wilson took us into the premier league after three seasons with a negative net spend. He didn’t spend a copper coin. I think it was between £1million and £2million profit on player trading on the three seasons - and we went up. De Zeeuw was brought in for about £250k, when we’d sold Ooh Gerry Gerry for over £1.5million. Hendrie and Matty Appleby came for £200k ish fees the following summer leading in to 96/97 - but the fees were more than covered by the fees we got for Andy Payton and Brendan O’Connell. This is a very long winded way of saying Danny Wilson worked miracles and was a fantastic manager for us. With little to no resource whatsoever. He started in front of home crowds sometimes below 4000. Given his audition this spring, what on earth would suggest Hourihane will do anything like that? In all fairness he really shouldn’t be expected to.
Long winded thee!, chortle !!!! I'm not and have not advocated for Hourihane to get the job but he's here and we are stuck with him wether folk bairn about it or not. For me time to properly judge him is next season not the arse end of this. He wasn't my choice but I've liked the cut of his gib over the last week or so , wether he can back that up or is allowed to back that up up next season remains to be seen.........sithi.
Can’t think of anyone less qualified to manage defensive duties , he hasn’t done whilst being on the pitch or off it what makes you think he can do it as a trainer/ coach
It's great these players are P.R trained it's okay robbo saying that performance is embarrassing. Over the season from top to bottom it's not good enough, but you need to take a good luck at yourself for the 2nd and the week before. Robbos another fans favorite who can do no wrong to some I get that.
I’ll wear that new title with pride. Fair cop. To a degree. As for your point about Conor being bizarrely sheltered from blame, I don’t see that. I read the forum on Saturday and just as it was in the previous game, it was post after post criticising him and his appointment. I don’t even think I, Chief Hourihane Lover jumped to his defence. I think I called it an embarrassment and the lot of them involved should be ashamed. Marc Roberts seems to have agreed based on this thread. I wanted CH in charge and it was never about immediate results with this particular group of players for me. I have called all season for a rethink at the club, a change of tack, a reset. I believe we’ll see that post-season. And for what it’s worth, I fully appreciate where you and others are coming from regards him getting the gig when he did. Or at all. I get it. Let’s hope it works out, as you say, and I have thousands of fellow members in my Conor appreciation society by the end of the year.
Some brilliant re-writing of history in this thread again. First, well done Robbo for saying those things. They are spot on. Second, Robbo has actually been the only defender who can hold his head up this season. Way above the rest, and at 34, that’s no mean feat. Third, I get the criticism of Hourihane - not been a great start - but is anyone seriously suggesting he’s not going to be the Coach come the start of next season? He clearly is. That gives the fans 2 options: one - support him for the first 3 months and see how he is performing after a Summer of being in charge. Two, don’t support him. But for ***** sake, please shut the **** up. We don’t really want to listen to you whinging constantly about someone who has been in the post for 10 minutes, for the next 6 months.
