RE: Not sure That's the real shame that we didn't get the coverage at that particular time to show all the goals he scored - the fact of the matter is that he hit the back of the net something like (off the top of my head) 95 times in about 204 games. That is an absolutely sensational strike rate for an attacking midfielder - and who knows how many assists he got. So often he would have that bit of extra special something that could unlock a defence that would otherwise stand resolute. If Glavin doesn't convince you off that video - it's the video - not the player. Also take into consideration that he worked himself into half chances that many strikers never had the guile to - so he hit the post in many snap shot situations - but he worked those opening so often that inevitably he also scored many goals.
RE: I was stood in the same area I just love that. I've already told this story once on here, maybe a year ago, but I'll tell it again for those who haven't heard it (apologies mate, I think you have!). I got put on this job once in Richmond. I was travelling up there and back from York every day catching a lift with a bloke who was born in London. As we introduced ourselves he told me he used to live in Rotherham, as his ex-wife was from there, and because her side of the family were massive Rotherham fans, he used to go and watch them regularly. This was during the late seventies and early eighties. He told me all about the wonderful derby games that used to go on between Rotherham and us at that time - and I admitted that Rotherham has some very good players at that time (tony towner for example) he admired many of the players we had. He particularly picked out Derek Parker for more praise that he had anyone else 'He was so quick, good touch, excellent short passer, real intelligence etc etc'. I said to him 'What? Better than Ronnie Glavin?' 'FACKIN' 'ELL!' he exclaimed in sheer horror 'NOBODY WAS BETTER THAN GLAVIN!' Sums it up though.
In the old days onlly numbers 1 to 12 were used 2 and 3 were the full backs 5 and 6 were the centre halves 9 and 10 were the forwards leaving 4 7 8 and 11 for the midfield None of us thought it strange that he had 4 in those days
Barnsley v Enfield How come, that for a team ive never heard of - Oakwell looked packed to the frickin rafters? What league was that in and where are Enfield now!? A bit before my time i think.
F.A. Cup 4th Round January 1981 They were in the Isthmian League at the time and the attendance was 20 000+ . A 1-1 draw at Oakwell was followed by a 3-0 replay victory at White Hart Lane . The replay attendance was over 32 000 , which exceeded the gate for the Tottenham/Arsenal derby game about 10 days previously . Part of White Hart Lane was under construction at the time .
RE: Barnsley v Enfield Ah, that was a classic cup-tie lad!
At the time we were just about to get promoted from what's now Div One to the Championship, and Enfield were top of the Isthmian League and were about to be promoted into what's now the Conference.
Because we were doing so well, and because the Enfield manager had been giving it large about us being a bunch of Northern hoofers (camels, he called us) there were 24251 at the Well to see us put them in their place. Didn't happen though - they played out of their skins and we were lucky to get away with a 1-1 draw.
Because of all the hype, there was huge interest in the replay and Enfield switched it to White Hart Lane, where an unbelievable 35244 turned up. In the end we won comfortably 3-0, but for long periods again they really gave us a game.
Great days!

Quite a few things wrong with that Farnham Banks wore 5 in midfield Evans wore 7 in central defence Parker wore 8 up front Mchale wore 10 in midfield
I must be getting old I'd forgotton about Banger and Evans, but now you mention it you are right, and just wasnt thinking about Parker
RE: Barnsley v Enfield We took 7,500 down to White Hart Lane for the replay - that was anunbelievable turnout within two to three days. They switched the tie to a bigger ground cos Enfield's capacity was only 7,500 at the time.... We were stood at the back of the away end and i can well remember a policeman turning to his colleague and commenting on how many we had took down. He reckoned we'd took more than Arsenal a few days earlier. It was certainly a magical night!
RE: Barnsley v Enfield could be wrong but wasn,t the away leg at spurs the highest attendance ever involving a nonleague team summat like that anyway!
RE: Barnsley v Enfield best away game i,ve ever been to involving barnsley, superb night.that was when they were really worth watching superb footballing side!
RE: Barnsley v Enfield best away game i,ve ever been to involving barnsley, superb night.that was when they were really worth watching superb footballing side!
RE: Barnsley v Enfield It was the highest attendance between a 3rd or 4th division side and a non-league side. Those were the days when people just turned out because it was the FA Cup regardless of who we played....it was years before I missed a FA Cup tie home or away.
RE: Barnsley v Enfield The FA Cup was always sumat to really look forward to. It's a shame it's lost its popularity these days. Normally; Barnsley would take a huge following with them on Cup days.
