Awesome Made Ronaldo look like Eric Tinkler. In todays warped market £10million AT LEAST. FACT! FACT! FACT! FACT! FACT! FACT! FACT!
'tackled back' good 'un. McHale won the ball, played it to Banks who spotted the run of Glavin and hit a tremendous 30 yard pass straight to his feet. Glavin went past the last defender like he wasn't there and coolly slotted home in the corner of the net. Every week. Or it seems that way in my memory.
I'm not renowned for my memory But in this case, it is photographic. That description is spot on. Well apart from at Rotherham where he just "happened" to be waiting when Barra's blocked shot just dropped to him. Perfect example of how to anticipate a possible chance.
Simply the best. For me, at least, the best player I've seen in a Barnsley shirt. Went to my first games in 1972 and he's the only player I've seen in all that time that got the crowd on its feet just by getting the ball. There was an genuine roar of anticipation whenever he picked up possession - usually because he made summat happen. Best memory was a game at Millmoor - was it the Cup? Not sure, but I think we won 4-2 and Ronnie played an absolute blinder. Tightest packed away end I've ever been in and seem to recall Ronnie running almost the length of the field to slot home at the far end after a counter-attack. Brilliant player. Privelige to see him in his pomp and while SJH and Higgy did a great job for us, they don't even come close, IMHO.
Here is a good clip http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=GNMs9HIzhDg&feature=related Glavin is always wearing 4 The video quality doesnt do the team or ronnie justice - and there for some strange reason are some Ronnie moore goals in there as well The last goal on 8 minutes clasic example of Glavin at his best - as soon as the ball was put through to him you knew he'd score with the confidence you have that KO would miss
out scored Kenny Dalglish Ronnie Glavin out scored Dalglish in the season before he moved to Liverpool, at the time Dalglish moved for a British record of 400k, Ronnie was in a class of his own and i still don't know why to this day why he came to us and even more puzzling why he wasn't picked up by one of the bigger clubs, he had been linked to Man Utd before his move to Celtic. I am glad he stayed with us without doubt the best player to ever pull on a Barnsley Shirt and in my opinion he played in a Barnsley team that was better than the promotion winning side that took us to the Premier League. Looking at players of todays value with Beattie being sold at 3.5m out of the Championship then Glavin would be at least 8 to 10m
To put another perspective on it I was chatting to a Celtic supporter at a party over Christmas. As soon as he knew I supported Barnsley he went off on a ten minute eulogy of Ronnie Glavin. He reckoned Ronnie was one of the best ever at Cletic. He was easily the best player I've seen play for Barnsley.
the best for me that Ive seen at Oakwell as others have said the buzz from the crowd when he picked it up particularly near the box terrified the oposition, absolutely unforgettable ask Big Lil he'll tell yer
Wonderful player Always looked slightly overweight but was one of the quickest players I've ever seen over 10 yards when there was a chance of a goal at the end. Saw him score a spectacular goal against Derby, a bit like the one Howard scored against Cardiff when he chested it down and volleyed it. Another good one was the at Swillsbro, he came on as sub with 20 mins to go and in the next attack, he was played in on the left, drew the keeper and slipped it in the far corner for a 1-0 win. Best goal I saw from him was at Elland Rd; he won the ball in our box near the goal-line, beat 2 or 3 Weeds players before sprinting clear of the area, played a 1-2 (with David Johnson) near the half-way line and scored from the edge of the Weeds box. Magnificent. Glavin's goal was the equaliser in a 2-1 win. One season at Celtic, he played in the same team as Dalgleish and scored more goals than him. At Barnsley, his scoring record (for a midfield player) ranks alongside Redfearn's and beats many decent strikers. It's hard to put anyone in front of Redfearn, but for me Glavin just shades it.
We've never had a player since King Ronnie to excite,...... score and stun opponents in the manner he did week in week out, his off field troubles are the only reason that he was never a top flight regular domestically and internationally.
The Rotherham match was in the League, Banks got the other 3. The last goal was scored by Glav, a great ball by Banks released Barrowclough on the left and his shot was parried by the 'keeper and Ronnie stuck it away. I thought our best player on the day was Barrowclough, he was magnificent, some of his crosses from both wings were fantastic. I've got the highlights of the match from ITV on DVD, PM me if you want a copy.
Jesus saves and Glavin scores from the rebound ... classic The one and only A one off The most gifted player I've ever seen in a Barnsley shirt and a lovely fella too
First time i saw Ronnie Glavin was at Belle Vue when he had just joined the reds from Scotland. We were playing in a pre- season friendly, I said to my mate at the time when this guy loses a bit of weight and gets fit he will be an excellent player for the reds. He went on to be the finest player i have seen in a reds shirt, pace could beat a man and he was always in the right place to score a goal. In todays market who knows but he was priceless for BarnsleyFC.
Been watching Barnsley since 1969 no one comes close to Firefly imho I believe he got 29 goals in his first season and 23 in his second , and Oh yeah Wendie fans were **** scared every time he came up against them. Remember one game at hillsboro when he was a sub got loads of stick off them when warmed up , came on and destroyed them , a mate at work who was washday through and through said there fans would have stumped up the money to buy him. I agree we had some great players in the late 90s but Glavin will always be the one for me , Allan Clarke and him started the ball rolling for the 15 years to follow along with Earnest Dennis the chairman who got Clarke to come in as Player Manager and backed him with what resources he could.
Banks contribution was/is very underrated class player that possibly should have gone on to international stage. Glavin was the most exciting player I've seen though.
