Cant he just retire FFS. The person who said hes a well rounded footballer is right. Hes a fat clown taking the place of better, younger strikers like Kane. Wish he'd pish off the overrated overweight cretin
Rooney has been and still is a fantastic player, If he had been more selfish in his career and continued to play like he did when he was younger we would be taking about him as one of the best in the world. He gives his all for the teams he plays for and receives completely unfair criticism. IMO
Messi - never scored a goal against anyone decent in a competitive fixture. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lionel_Messi#International_career
Gives his all by non stop whingeing, constantly looking for hollywood passes that arent on and the occasional transfer request? The guy is the most hyped up, overrated player out there and he's pretty much the embodiment of whats wrong with modern football. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
AS all know I am a ManUre hater...however how many goals on Linnekers tally were in friendly games. Maybe the tallies should be totalled up in competition games ... and wipe away the Friendly... kick abouts.
What a strange thread. People appearing to show genuine hatred to our nation's best footballer who will end up England and Manchester United's all-time leading goalscorer. Bizarre.
It happens every time England play. I can understand why he's not loved, his questionable off field behaviour has put paid to that. But I don't get the criticism of him as a footballer, the stats after all don't lie. I can only put it down to frustration that he's not quite as brilliant as we all hoped he would be when his career started. Or perhaps some people don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to football.
For me, its the fact that he's just not anywhere near as good as he's made out to be. He isnt Englands best player and never has been and certain people believing he was is something that cost us. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Rooney is a good footballer. A very good footballer and a prize asset for England, particularly in qualification. Gary Lineker is Gary Lineker. Doesn't matter if Rooney is better or worse at football than Lineker, he's not Gary Lineker. The majority of us, 99.99%, are judged on what we do. Rooney is one of those and when the history books are written it'll show he was very successful. A tiny minority are judged on who they are, and Lineker is amongst those. What he did and who he is transcends football. It's unfair to judge Rooney against Lineker, because Lineker is something different. Judge Rooney against all the other strikers England have ever had and he stands up to scrutiny and then some, but to judge him against Lineker is unfair because a player/person like that comes around so very rarely. It's not just once in a generation, it's once since football was invented. For England at any rate.
Depends how old you are. If you're old enough to remember '66 then probably not. If you're too young to remember '86 and '90 then I doubt you think that either. If you're my age and you do remember '86 and '90 then you'll recall how in '86 there were only two players worth watching: Lineker and Maradonna. One took drugs, scored with his hand, and cheated his way to winning the world up. The other never got booked in his entire career and won the golden boot. They both scored in probably the most infamous world cup game of all time. In '90 you would have seen an international forward as good as there's ever been, scoring the goals to take us to a world cup semi final and being part of a team that completely outclassed the eventual winners. We've never looked that good since and our centre forward was the best player on the park, Gazza's tears not withstanding. And if you're a Barnsley fan from that era you'll remember some titanic battles he had with Mick McCarthy. He's not a god, but he was a sensational football player, the likes of which we haven't seen in an England shirt since.
Overall England are rubbish compared to those heady years of misery. They may well be England players and qualify as such but none of them really stand out for the hall of fame. Lineker by a mile.
And this is the problem, people dislike him because they can't see past his personality. He's an easy guy to dislike but he's a fantastic footballer at the same time. Compared to the likes of Mario Ballotelli, a player who's done little of note in his career, who gets more plaudits than he deserves because he's a bit of a lad. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
Rooney missed 3 absolute sitters... I said during the game Lineker and Shearer would not have missed. IMHO Rooney is a good player, but not a great!
Rooney - good player (not world class) who has largely failed for England (what matters to us non-united fans) when it matters. Also a bit of a knobhead. Lineker - the best striker we've had in my lifetime who scored goals galore in the biggest games for England. A world class talent who scored club goals home and abroad. Also a great personality who is loved by the nation. No competition.
Supertyke is right Rooney has scored lots of goals against poorer opposition, Also scoring in a friendly even against teams like Brazil is nothing like the same as scoring in a real world cup finals match. Dont get me wrong I think Rooney is a very good player though I now think he is past his best He will go on and get over 50 goals for England but true world class players have a bit extra - Lineker had it, but I just dont think Rooney is quite at the same level.
