I've always found it strange that goals in friendlies (and even caps) are counted in international football. Because they don't, err, count do they?
Rooney became England's all time record goal scorer in competitive fixtures two years ago when he scored his 27th to overtake Michael Owen. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-Rooney-scored-competitive-goals-England.html He's scored 7 more goals in competitive matches since then, moving him on to 34, way ahead of the rest.
How many more 'competitive' games has he played compared to Greaves/Charlton/Lineker? A lot I'd imagine is the answer
'Competitive' games being against the likes of Kazakhstan and Lithuania. Lets talk WC finals goals or goal. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
International stats these days are pointless. They mean nothing. Slovenia's the second / third best team in our group & how many of their team would get a game in the prem? Not many if any. Switzerland's the only other half decent side & who've they got apart from Lichsteiner & Shaqiri? The only stats that matter are the ones from world cup's & European championships.
But the reason Lineker never got booked was that he never put a tackle in. He was an out and out goal hanger (by his own admission) and could be relied on to be in the right place at the right time, his finishing was exceptional but he never created chances for others or dictated a game the way Rooney can/has/does.
Exactly my thoughts although with way he's been made out on here I thought I must be missing something. Personally think Shearer was better than both. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Shearer Club - 283 in 599 (goal every 2.12 games) Country - 30 in 60 (2 games) Lineker Club - 238 in 466 (1.96 games) Country - 48 in 80 (1.67 games) On pure goalscoring (the usual benchmark for strikers) Lineker takes it. Plus he did it abroad at one of the biggest clubs on the planet.
But Shearer did it at a time when football was a much higher standard and in a lower quality side for the most part. He was the perfect allround centre forward. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Football was a much higher standard? Really? That's a whole different discussion, I don't necessarily agree with you. AC Milan of late 80s/early 90s would have beaten any club side ever.
Man Utd of 08ish? Barca of 5 years ago? Or even now? Football is a much higher standard now than back then, particularly in this country. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes all 3. That AC Milan side was the best club side ever, even taking the passing of time into account. IMO obviously as that's all it is. It's not a better standard. They have better pitches, facilities, training etc, which makes the game quicker. But better? Not IMO.
Although its hypothetical I'd be more than confident of all 3 of those sides beating that AC team. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It's an interesting debate. Over time both technique and fitness have improved a great deal. I wonder how the 66 cup side would do if they hopped into a time machine and came to the present day. I reckon they'd get murdered by any premiership team. On the other hand of those players had been brought up with today's level of coaching they'd likely still be world class I guess
