Root is possibly the best batsman in the world at the moment he's certainly the best English batsman by far however as a captain he's average at best and at times poor. While it's true that there are serious issue with the batting dept of the England team and there isn't a lot Root could do about that his handling of the bowlers left a lot to be desired as did his field positioning and tactics.
How about Eoin Morgan as interim captain for the rest of 2022 while a longer-term candidate emerges? (Assuming he could be persuaded to step into the Test side).
I agree a short term option is probably the best bet - I was going to suggest James Vince. I don't think Stokes should take it - he's recently taken time away from the game due to mental health issues and other injuries. He doesn't need this burden. We need a short term safe pair of hands - whether such a thing exists is another matter.
I just don’t see that being on Morgan’s radar at all. I think he’s more than happy just doing the limited overs stuff and enjoying private time between series.
Essentially Root has remained captain all this time as nobody else has been guaranteed to play apart from himself and Stokes. For a variety of reasons Stokes hasn't been a option and as others have said still probably isn't. We are such a shambles it would possibly be worth giving it to someone based solely on their ability as a captain regardless of batting ability.
