Ah the memories when I was young, life was so simple and Saturday night moods depended entirely on how Barnsley had done that day. Great to watch again and like the rest of you old enough I was there and braved the death trap
**** me. Only done 10 minutes and I’m as excited as a ba$tard. Had forgotten how much under the cosh we were under early on. Ref pulling us up for challenges they get away with. Reds fans being pulled over the wall out of the Tivoli and made to walk around to the Railway End. Notice how much more densely packed it was compared to the Tivoli. Health and Safety? Nah. Classic change strip. Players wearing black boots. Had forgotten this was the Saturday after we’d hammered top first division outfit Brighton in the league cup. Bloody hell - what a time. What a team.
Barraclough was brilliant that day, beat his man almost every time and produced fantastic quality crosses.
When I think of greatest ever Barnsley games I've been to this is right up there with the best! IMO this team played the best football seen at Oakwell and had the best level of support both in numbers and noise made. I'd love to be part of that era all over again!
Barraclough had a stormer . Gerry Forrest was a decent player but he made him look very ordinary. Macca spraying passes about too and Ronnie running the length of the field after 90 minutes to grab the 4th goal.
I loved this game when I attended, and also having viewed it since. However I now need to put it through a convoluted entertainment and technical merit scoring process to see what I really should have thought about it.
They had an overspill in the side terrace next to the away end. I was stuck in there with a very limited view. Agree about Millmoor Lane. There were plenty of potential Hillsboroughs before it actually happened.
Thank you so much, kendraytyke. A proper football team playing in a proper away strip. We were stood on the terracing in the front of their old stand. When Ian Banks scored his first goal, I was gobsmacked just how many Barnsley fans were stood around us. Our fans seemed to be in all sections of Millmoor that day.
Towed a bit that first half. Just off for a pee and a cup of Bovril. Barra’s playing well but Ronnie’s a bit quiet. We need to be a bit more aggressive but I’m confident we’ll come back strongly after Norman’s given them a little “encouragement” at half time. Like how we’re man marking and have a man on each post at corners. Bet they don’t defend like that in the future.
You hit jackpot with this one. For those of us who were there it seems to be universally one of the most memorable games we ever went to. For those too young it's a rare chance to have a good look at what the fuss was about.
Was 14 and can remember the merry miller's chucking bricks over the wall as we walked up the lane after match caught one right on the top of my head probably explains quite a lot of events since
Cracking that, I've let my old man know. He was there with my mum. I was at home with my grandparents probably still filling my nappy. My dad said he can't wait to watch it back.
Was there with my dad in the seats on the far side...sure we were under cover and we had 2 thirds of the length of the pitch. Agree about Millmoor lane....that was a death trap !
Thanks Kendray. One of those games that lives on in the memory and fantastic to see it all again. I didn't realise that Banger's third goal was so near the end though. And what about Glavin's - box to box or what?
I was there too, away end was packed and mental. I accidently knocked a coppers helmet off when we scored.
Well I was there as well along with the father in-law. I can remember us hugging one another when Ronnie got that last one and that didn’t happen very often I can tell you! To be fair Rotherham played pretty well that afternoon but I think if they’d done stats on games in them days I think we would have edged it on possession. Nice work @Kendray tyke
