38 sparrows all at one time? The most we got was 3.of any species. I could swear when I'm not watching we have way more birds in and around the garden, they're certainly noisy enough.

    We saw 2 magpies
    3 coal tit
    1 great tit
    3 sparrows
    2 chaffinches
    1 blackbird
2 woodpigeons ( one stayed in the tree most of the hour, I think he was joining in the birdwatch)

Have we done our count wrong?

We counted the number of visitors over a 1 hour period.

The fresh water I put out yesterday turned to ice overnight, so I've removed that this morning.
I'm convinced the blackbirds would prefer sparkling water!:D

I thought you only recorded the highest number of any species seen at one time so you didn't count the same birds twice?

yes, it’s the most you see at one time. Not the cumulative amount.

well if you won’t offer it, I may try and tempt one or two down here... been a long time since blackbirds we’re in the garden, and we used to have a lot as recent as the summer.

When they've fed, they're quite happy to sing their little hearts out. It's beautiful.

I hope they reappear by barbecue season... always a joy listening to them go through their new mobile phones ringtones ;-)

We had a pair that had young always around, so very worrying they’ve just vanished for months and months.

Star of my show was a gorgeous female sparrowhawk who glided across my field of vision and parked herself on the garden wall. She was only there for 10 seconds but it was a moment I'll never forget.
