Sacking him would be previous - and pointless

Clarke is there to be shot at, like the pals in WWI. He takes the flak but the generals are 20 miles behind the frontline applying the same tactics over and over again and throwing more managers into the fray in the hope that eventually there'll be a decent outcome. Its not quite lions led by donkeys but rather sheep led by a donkey led by mules.
