I was at Huddersfield v palace with the palace fans. We stood for 90 mins of the match behind the knee high seat. I’d describe that as unsafe standing.
We have better things to spend money on. The cost of this would take years to claw back. Waste of time and a backwards step.
Grounds are safe when you are sat down! However people standing in seated areas is deemed unsafe by the authorities, there would be no need for safe standing if it wasn’t we’d all just stand up anyway, at zero cost. Safe standing, again clue in the title enables areas of standing to take place on a 1 for 1 seat ratio. No moving, no crushing, no tumbling down the stand on the odd occasion we score a goal! It also lets the club decide whether that area in question is all seated or standing. Will give greater flexibility, allow limited choice and most importantly be safe
Again you're not grasping the point and again you are going about it in quite a patronising way (clue is in the title etc.) Safe standing isnt called so because of the current situation with people standing up at grounds!!!!!! It is called that in the UK alone and is called that as an alternative to the old terraces and what happened at Hillsborough. It is comparing standing to then hence the "safe" tag, not the current situation now!! So no need to be so condescending.
But Hillsboro was caused by a criminal set of decisions by syp wasn’t it? I think in this day and age it would be fairly simple and cheap to open traditional terraces and allow these areas to fill to 75% capacity. If you had 1 area per ground, only for the home fans, at the opposite end to the away following and at a cheaper tariff, then we may get some sort of atmosphere back
Yes completely agree, there were a number of factors that led to the disaster and terracing itself wasn't the primary cause. I definitely feel that there is a place for terraces again. My earliest memories of Oakwell were standing in the early 90s, albeit struggling to see! I enjoy standing at Headingley when I watch the Giants play Rhinos etc.
That was a massive part of it with other factors like ex pros and dignitaries putting their spare tickets up via touts encouraging ticketless fans to travel in hope . Although this had been going on for decades linked to other factors it was a disaster waiting to happen aided with a corrupt incompetent and arrogant police force like SYP it did
just take the seats out of wsl and put barriers up, I used to stand there at the side of the tunnel for years but having a knackered back and knee i'm happy and comfy sitting in the ponty now. say its standing for 500 if there's 350 season ticket holders in there then you can sell a MAX of 150 matchday tickets for the standing area
This is true. I don't think people realise what it actually is ... and that's just an allocated place to stand. If we were to do it though, only place possible would be West Lower. People saying down one side of Ponty would mean those seated couldn't see one of the corners of the pitch.
It's a waste of money and would not (in my opinion) generate a better atmosphere. It is nothing like the old terraces that we had. Oh and if we do decide to consider this folly then I'd hope they would leave the Ponty exactly as it is.
A lot was made of Hillsborough, and sadly for obvious reasons, but people didn't lose their lives just because they weren't sat down - they had nowhere to go because they were hemmed in by fencing. I know that game was all ticket, but I can remember games at Oakwell when it was rammed full. If clubs could squeeze you in they would do. Some ground capacities were asking for trouble, but it rarely became a problem. These days overcrowding a standing area is much easier to avoid, and I really can't see a problem with some areas being restored to exactly how they were. Problem with newer stands that have been purpose built for seats is that the steps are twice as wide and deep, and that's probably the season for the new designs we're now seeing.
Far safer than standing in the current stand; if you lose balance, you could fall onto the row in front, who (if also standing) will fall onto the row in front of them. Very dangerous. The safe standing barriers would prevent this and allow everyone to stand safely. I think it's a good idea.
Wow. Finish your love in will you! But you said current grounds were safe so you must have been talking about the current situation? excuse me if I’m wrong but the new design seen at Celtic is still a seat, with a standing space in front because it fully retracts, and is about as far removed from the old terraces as possible. Some fans will be very disappointed.
Doesn't it work on the basis that for every seated person you can have 1.5 people standing so increasing the overall capacity. I know its probaby different here in the UK but im sure in Germany that's the general basis they go off.
Some fans just want to be able to stand at football matches, so I doubt they'll be disappointed- rail seating allows for it without issue. I mentioned current grounds because you were of the belief it relates to safety now and was trying to get you to understand that its nothing to do whatsoever with ground safety right now. I can see that it's pretty pointless trying to help you understand the rationale behind it as both myself and another poster have done so already (and you are still not getting it!) so i'll leave it there!
I'd definitely be in favour of safe standing. As a below average height football fan the minute someone stands in front of me, I can't see what's happening and I have to stand. I've also seen kids and adults alike tummel into the next set of seats when the action has got tense. My esteemed other half is an above average height football fan with long legs and more than once if he's been seated then jumped up has scraped the front of his shins because the gaps between rows is restrictive. Giving places for people that want to stand so shortarses such as myself don't resort to standing on seats and longshanks like my other half can go to games without bodily injury sounds good all around to me.
