Unfortunately the West Stand is an eyesore and does not, in my opinion, provide much income to the club. From a business and atmosphere point of view, I would suggest it comes down and is replaced by a stand that provides an increased commercial income, completes the ground in terms of filling in the corners, improves facilities generally and also is nice to the eye ..... There has to be a balance between cost and potential return ... but ....it would certainly help the owners meet one of their targets ie increase commercial revenue.
I currently sit in East Lower but if they redeveloped the West Stand I’d sit in the right hand side of the West as you look from the pitch . The last time I was in there was the Chelsea FA cup game , obviously it was great because we won but it just felt right watching a game from there , probably as I used to stand there as a kid when we were kicking towards the Kop , I’d like to end my supporting days in there but I think it’s a fair way off being redeveloped
This x 1000. Opposition fans might laugh at Barnsley, or call it a shithole, but we feature when people make lists of grounds. People like Oakwell, and the West Stand is part of that. It's distinct and evocative.
I sat in the west stand for one game last season.. wooden uncomfortable seats, posts in the way of the view.. got to half time, had to struggle and battle a way to the toilet, to then pee against a wall.. the facilities are appaling and in my opinion should be knocked down yesterday. As a side opinion, the roof looks to be asbestos corrugated sheets, everytime the ball bounces off of it i cant help but think thats a health and safety disaster waiting to happen. Only takes a sheet to break and however maby people in the "seats" below are exposed to asbestos. As for Goodison Park, its more often than not voted the worst of all prem grounds in polls about peoples favourite away grounds, due to space, facilities and view. I honestly believe a decent architect should be able to design something a million times better to suit the modern H+S legislation, fill the corner in between the ponty, but yet retain some semblance of the original.
It's a unique stand as it could be demolished without any reduction in capacity. The lower tier is built into ground level and wouldn't need demolishing. Demolish the wooden box with corrugated roof and rebuild the current upper tier structure the full length of the pitch with a roof that extends over the existing lower tier. That would make the ground feel more enclosed.
It's the redbrick wall with the broken glass on top (sorry H & S) behind the stand that I like - not sure why.
