Sorry, I know nothing about that. I can only judge the place based upon what it produces i.e the number of youngsters being signed on professional contracts and going on to play for the first team. On this basis the performance of the academy is poor.
We have too much **** behind the scene's. Our Management staff is terrible, SD, RK, K O'H then you have former school teachers running the academy and Kids teams. You look at other teams for example Hull, they have their manager then back room staff consisting of former managers from the top two divisions, other clubs also have former players running their academy. Simon Davey is an inexperienced manager and he's too big headed to let anyone else come in and give him a hand. We could have had a figure like Dave Bassett as a Football Director at the club (which i think PC should have done when appointing SD) or somewhere along the lines helping Davey. Neil Redfearn should have been brought in as Academy manager, Leeds have now got him. Former captain Joe Joyce, head of Newcastle Academy another example. We are so inexperienced throughout the club and have been for some time, how many times have we gone down the cheap option of giving someone their first managerial post? Anderson, Wilson, Ritchie, Davey all in the last 15 years and only Wilson as worked. Time we got in some experience throughout the club and got it running properly and producing good young players instead of throwing our money away on former school teachers who have been on a 4 day course to get a coaching badge but when they were at school they were the last to be picked, because they were **** at football like the fat kid on Kes in the white t-shirt.
Fair do's.
It needs looking at though imho - all aspects of it. At some point SD has to get more involved in the 'production line' of young players at barnsley, because it looks from the outside as he and the club are being short changed by the Academy.

I don't see how anyone could disagree with that. I would also add that Mr Branson never fails to wind me up with his comments after games. I fear his positive responses are more about painting over the cracks than they are about developing any potential young talent for the club. Many readers of these comments believe his every word and envisage a rosy future filled with talented youngsters. Not true I'm afraid.
Agreed to a certain extent mate, but surely the whole purpose of the academy is to discover these kids in the first place and then develop them so they become 1/2 yr scholars as they get older. As for Huddersfield, most of there better youngsters seem to get poached by Man Utd as they have an academy set up in that area also. Whichever way you look at it though, we have'nt produced a decent player (championship class) for years.
Agreed. I cannot remember a single one in the 7 years that I have been watching them. There is hope though. RNL has the potential provided he continues to develop.
The "academy" status is doomed too restrictive on our budget. Expect a restructuring in the close season unless the FA slacken the rules.
In my opinion The coaches who see them regularly know whether they are good enough or not, not me. Just out of interest, a player I heard great things about was Luke Fedorenko. He's now in Worksop Town's U19 team. Says a lot really.
So you don't think that any of the current 1st year scholars have any potential? Only RNL has any potential of the current group in your opinion.
I think it has been mis managed since the dark days of septic boil. There doesnt sem to be any structure or a wow factor assositated with it any more. Nevermind the lack of a scouting network scouting youth games around south yorkshire. given that money is non exsistant for alot of clubs youth should be the way forward and the club should be structured to produce one or two per season who may make it, if not will generate a small return from a sale and sell on clauses. You look at Sheffield Utd's Youth set up, they have Mark Smith who is highly respected as a youth team coach plus has over 400 first team apperances, not forgetting they also have Adrian Littlejohn as community development officer, an Ex Blade. Wednesday have Sergent Wilko, need I say more? Leed's have redders and Thommo as their coaches, expirenced ex pro's with over 1300 games between them. All those people you can spend 30 seconds googling and say yes they know their **** about football. Then you look at Leicester City's new football in the community scheme, the coaches are Ian marshall and Muzzy izzet, two players synonomous with the club. All these clubs use the fact they have ex pro's as coaches and they get the goods so to speak. I'm not a dad yet but if I had a talented child of 11 years old I wouldn't let oakwell take them on., theres nothing on Bransons background, who h is, what's his qualification etc. whereas all the others do and i think it is starting to show.
RE: The "academy" status is doomed I'm sure there was a post on Mark Stokes site saying that Davey was going to take a much more active role in the academy from next season, so I think changes are definitely under way. I don't think it was reported on the official site, and I can't find it at the minute on Stokes' site, so maybe he jumped the gun on this, but it wouldn't surprise me to see a fairly fundamental change.
Your original posting related to 2nd year students and my original posting related to 2nd year students. As for the first years, I feel that it is too early to tell. As I have said elsewhere, I have seen first year students with potential before, including two lads who played for England at U16 level. Both players showed more potential in their first year than any of the current first years and yet neither player was eventually signed on professional terms. I note that in one of your previous postings that you expressed the view that 2 or 3 of the first years show great promise. I will say again what I said then. I hope that you are right.
Is SuperTyke poorly? Gordon's post has been there two and a half hours without anyone reminding him that Andy Ritchie got us promoted.
I don't disagree with your view on the 2nd year scholars. However I was surprised at the reasons given to the lad as to why he wasn't being offered anything. I do think that there may be two or three from the 1st years who have a chance. However if I was a parent of a scholar, I would be concerned at the withdrawal of the reserves from the league.
Steve Torpey is our boss now at York COE after Redders departure,I think Ronnie Branson has the top level for coaching but the man who had the most success is Eric Winstanley, Kay,Austin,Robbie Williams etc have all gone on to play the game professionally.
