Was going to say the exact same, mate. Wed never have thought it would turn out just as good as it did. Do I think it'll happen again with this group? No. But I think with a couple of nifty additions we can do a lot better.
Plenty would disagree. Having that squad in the relegation zone in league one is an achievement in itself I suppose.
Completely agree, mate. Said it in another post, we used to give managers 2 or 3 transfer windows+, now its usually under 10 games. It was 3 league games when Duff was here...
If we went on a similar run to that team, starting tomorrow, we’d possibly go up automatically, or be well in the hunt. Good thing for us now is we don’t need to improve as much as they did, and don’t have as much ground to make up. One thing I learned from that season is ‘never say never’. That team were as bad as they were brilliant, and opinions on social media were no different to what they are today.
Didn't we do that twice under Johnson ?. One was in the previous season when he first got the job. And those six successive league wins took us from bottom five, to top six!.
You’ll have to fact check this, but I think Johnson’s first season started well after a win at Gillingham, got us up near the playoffs and then we won 1 from our last 10 or 11. We seemed to drop off after a win at Oldham.
Yeah (going from memory), I think it was five straight wins without conceding, and then I think we conceded one when we won at his former club Oldham. And they really gave him a harsh welcome that day on his return to Boundary park lol. But then after getting ourselves into the Play off places with 10 games left, he/we totally peed away the rest of that season.
We beat Oldham in both of his seasons. The first season was 3-1 which we followed with a poor run. Following season was around this time, it was bleeding freezing. Won 2-1 with a late goal from George Long. We were starting getting going a bit then, but yeah Jonno got dogs abuse both games from their fans.
And we also went out there on pens, in the Fluffy Paintpot Trophy thing, after a 2-2 draw. Btw one of Danny's last wins with us in January that season, was at home to Johnson's Oldham. And unbelievably, they were going for the Play offs at that time. I've never known a final-third of a season like it though. One minute we're feeling desperate, just a few places above the drop zone, with 16 games left. And Im sure we'd have taken survival on the last day if we had to, in order to stay up. But then we ended up feeling really disappointed that we didn't hold onto the Play off place, that we'd gained!.
Also, while it wasn't working and it was obviously never going to be the same as before, I felt sorry for Danny actually. And I think he's been quite critical of Mr Cryne, regarding his second time with us as manager.
Do you mean George Waring or Kevin Long? Sorry to be pedantic but it's thrashing my head because I can't recall a George Long for us!
You could clearly see the potential in that squad even when they were struggling. I have to say this current squad don't even come close.
O’Sullivan was great on loan. I’m surprised he had such an underwhelming career. I expected him to be a stand out player at league one level & maybe even make it in the championship.
