The Britannia Inn at Elterwater. Good rooms, grub and beer. Nice walk from there to Grasmere and back. Not too far (though a bit hilly!)

    Stratford Upon Avon?

First place I went with my partner and loved it.... Shakespeare and good beer, any more romantic? Flat walking and lovely scenery and buildings.

RE: London..........................end of, period, full stop

Birmingham's like a smaller London without the Thames or cockneys.</p>

There's also Little London in Leeds, which is quite like parts of London.

    Liverpool?

Or if you want a quite one I’ve done Windermere with the gf before and she enjoyed it.

Liverpool is a good place lots to do, friendly people and plenty of choice on an evening if you want a quite or a lively one. Had a meal on a floating restaurant, good views of the city from the river/sea.

Dublin, Amsterdam, Barcelona are cheap enough if you want to go a bit further by a short cheap flight.

Corny but if it's the romantic weekend you're after it ticks all the boxes.
Plenty to do and see on foot, shops, obviously, and good food.
Beer is the one it falls on, especially with the horror exchange rate - the going rate is about 7 euros a pint!!
Last time we went, cheap flight from Donny, public transport to reasonable hotel and job's a good 'un. Just as long as you realise they'll pillock your eyes out once you're there.

Otherwise go to the lakes. My personal favourite base is Keswick - We stay at The Paddock. £32pppn last time we stayed. Clean, friendly, good breakfast, on-site parking and close to the very decent town centre, stocked with loads of pubs.
Nice, easy walk round Buttermere a short drive away. Boat trip on Derwent from the edge of Keswick town centre. Haystacks, Helvellyn and Scafell Pike close by if you get adventurous. Can't go wrong.

    Yep

the more northern lakes were my favourites. Grasmere and Thirlmere and on up to Keswick. I'd urge people to venture past the tourist/retirement villages that are Bowness, Windermere, Ambleside and Consiton because there's so much more to the lakes. The west lakes offer ridges with great views out over the sea... Wasdale, Eskdale... those sort of places. You can then also take the ratty train, visit Muncaster Castle, Sellafield Visitors Centre, St Bees, Whitehaven. Or have a pint in the Prince of Wales at Foxfield.
