Re: when did they shut Wombwell baths then ? I heard that they were going to sell the library until it was pointed out that it didn't belong to them
Re: when did they shut Wombwell baths then ? Soreight fella, nowt like a bit of confirmation that mi memory aint well and truly fecked yet.
Re: so what is it now ? Drove past the other night and its now a dance place (for kids to learn how to dance).
have they boarded over the pool or have they filled it in. this is sad really... Its a very classical public bath. Not a swimming pool...but a public bath house... what the hell does the average councillor at Barnsley have lodged between the ears... its blatantly obvious it is in no shape or form grey matter. But then again when they took down the old Town hall in Hoyland and lots of other bits of Hoyland Tarn center, I was then convinced they are all brain dead. They then went on to knock down Hoyland Common junior school , built in the 1800's ... so surely listed to some degree. But Hey a few quid in a Councillors pocket can move mountains these days... corrupt bastads all of them.
Re: have they boarded over the pool or have they filled it in. The coop building down Hoyland is gonna be flattened and replaced by a open market . The market as now is being replaced by a aldi/ lidl supermarket . When will all this crap stop .
how far willthey take out that building? I have a very very dear friend who has the opticians across fom the vet.. Jackie... is her business gonna be hit by this.
Re: have they boarded over the pool or have they filled it in. Funnily enough Baz, my mum and dad met at wombwell baths in the 50's, at a dance on the boarded over pool. I wonder if they are using the same boards?
Re: have they boarded over the pool or have they filled it in. There's footage above on the covers , my older bro says the Beatles also did a gig at w/baths before they became famous of course .
Re: Wombwell Top Market........... Wombwell Top Market has now become an "outdoor extension" of Butchers Bar. Never ceases to amaze me how many people are sat in there at 7-45 in the morning, supping ale. George the Sock Man or Hattersley Ice Cream Van previously had pride of place at front of top market. Bottom market legend was "the egg man". This bloke sold eggs (obviously) and off cuts of timber that he propped up at side of library. He always had some rope keeping his trousers held up around what would have been a 40" plus waist. All the eggs had hen **** on them, never cleaned off for the customer. If anyone can get me an image of "the egg man" then please send me a pm.....I've been trying to find one for ages.......nostalgia !!!
Re: Wombwell Top Market........... Supping beer at7.45am , ey it'll be miners who have just come off the night shift . How I wish .
Re: Wombwell Top Market........... Now that thought would really cheer me up.....but sadly I think you know what type of characters these folk are.
Re: have they boarded over the pool or have they filled it in. Mine too, it must have been the place to be back then
Re: how far willthey take out that building? I'll bet she nivver saw that coming:biggrin: I'll get mi coyt.
