Yes. As far as councils are concerned, particularly Labour run councils unfortunately, I would say that the phrase 'they just don't get it' is fitting.
No, only Tories would sell the family Jewels. Don't we still have "THE 2" ? Selling the number plate wouldn't raise that much on the scale of Council economics and I think capital gains tax would also apply. The council is siting on millions in reserve funds which they are supposed to use when things get tough. Why don't they use them?
Most councils have been slowly chipping away at reserves for the last few years. The sale of the plate would be insignificant in the grand scheme of council budgets. It is a bit distasteful that they bought it in the 1st place mind. Do they own cars too? I know for a fact that harrogate council, a far more affluent area, only actually own 1 car (the mayoral vehicle, a skoda no less) and certainly don't have any private reg's.
Council's are legally required to retain a certain level of reserves. Most are down to that. There's a number of local authorities nationwide on the verge of bankruptcy. I was at the cabinet meeting where I live recently. The scale of the cuts being imposed on councils is staggering. Even local Conservative run LAs are severely criticising central government. For anyone who underestimates the task facing local authorities in balancing the books, providing statutory services, and trying to invest in the local area it is worth going to a full council meeting where they set the budget.
So its worth about 150k is that what you are saying? Additionally - one years worth of 10 employees is nothing. Do you know why, cos the very next year you have lay them off anyway. Again, its a drop in the ocean and stop thinking small ball. The deficit is huge and selling a car reg plate is not going to make a blind bit of difference.
I wish I had as much money as you where being made redundent today is no different to having a job for another year.
Thats not the point I am making. I understand that redundancy is not a very nice thing to go through - The point I am making is the small amount of money you would get is loose change and won't make any real difference to the situation. FFS How much is it worth in your opinion?
No I think the council should hire it out, complete with driver, for trips to away matches. A right money spinner.
But you're completely missing the point aren't you. Sure the council will still have money problems but as tesco say, 'every little helps' and whilst they may still have to make cuts next year I'm pretty damn certain that those people who are able to keep their jobs for another year will be of the opinion that it made a very real chuffing difference. And I don't know it's value, all I know is that worse plates have gone for a hell of a lot of money and that a tentative offer of 100k was made quite a few years ago now and was promptly turned down.
No I am not missing the point. I dont give a flying fook about the Reg plate, it makes no difference to my life at all. In fact I think private number plates are ******* stupid and anybody that has one is a complete mentalist. I have a rather well paid job near the top of a very large organisation. We make people redundant in the private sector all the time. Its not nice to have to have those conversations and I have been on the other end of them, personally . But business is business and you do what you need to do to make your organisation thrive. I will go back to my point. If the Car Reg is worth 100k (someone said 550k but that reg would not go for anywhere near that in this climate) then the money would be gobbled up in an instant. It won't save 10 jobs at all. Think of the bigger picture, the council don't just pay the salary of the individual but the employers NI, maybe a company car allowance then employee benefits which almsot doubles a salary all told. Consider on top of this the office space for the individual to work in which is all added costs. Out of 100k I reckon you would struggle to save 2 peoples costs over one year then you are back to square one. And the money has gone. Like I said, I couldnt care less about a flipping car reg cos I think they are ***** but 100k goes nowhere.
Its the most sought after reg number in the UK Mr nutkins sir. it could easily go for a lot more than that due to its age
On a similar subject. Shouldn't the NUM not have sold off the large empty looking office / house at the top of Old Mill Lane. Seems excessive for an organisation with approx less than 2000 members.
And all round video displays to that we can all watch Bobby Hassell's Greatest Clearances videos on the way out and back.
We may as well sell everything off that's the Tory goal the less well off should have nothing only those that are well off should be able to sample a decent life. Nobody has had more out of the taxpayer than the rich landowners and landlords and the Tories want a return to the status quo. That's the reason for the verbal attacks on trade unions the last hurdle the Tories have to clear for total anihalation of workers and lower class rights
