So so. Diminished by our lack of social intercourse.

Agreed and people on lower incomes will spend a higher proportion of their income thereby boosting consumption. It wont happen because the tories have already made concessions to the liberals at the lower end of the Income scale but one of the most divided societies in Europe would be totally morally bankrupt if the tories were in sole control of running the country right now.

And there are a lot of people working for minimum wage that work just as hard, many of them for people making a fortune.

They might have done nothing for an employer, but they have spent a considerable amount of time, effort and money obtaining the knowledge and skills which enable them to do certain jobs. Their pay should reflect this.

A good portion of degree students are at uni for the 3 year social life. Yes they come out with degrees (2.2's and 3rds) but I certainly wouldn't say they should be rewarded for their efforts. The rewards should come once you are successful in your chosen career.

You know how it works on here

Everyone that owns a company has done so by treading on the honest-as-the-day-is-long working class and not paying tax at all, whilst everyone else is kept down by the cartel of multinational greed and right wing govts.

Despite the fact we had Labour in power for 13 years but let's skip over that.

We'll ignore 'executives' in PCT's and other govt bodies including councils on salaries of £140k pa and more, who produce nothing and take plenty from the system. They haven't built anything, scarificed anything to get where they are, old boys (and girls) network sees to that.

Tony Blair asked Frank Field to 'think the unthinkable' about welfare and low pay etc - the only trouble was when he came back with suggestions that didn't fit in with how those round the Islington Dinner Tables saw the 'poor' and how to 'solve' poverty he was sidelined. The tragedy is that psyche has pervaded society and we're scared of tackling root causes of poverty - not just financial poverty but educational and social as well, because it might upset those who have made a career out of 'representing' the poor and have done very well out of it.

The treatment of Frank Field and by extension the refusal to give the poor the emans to get THEMSELVES out of poverty is the true legacy of 'New Labour'.

I was talking about people who get decent degrees, I agree that if you get a crap degree higher pay shouldn't logically follow, which it doesn't. If you get a crap degree you will struggle to get a good job in your field.

    Correct

It's my general experience that the less you get paid, the worse you are treated at work and the harder you're driven.

My first job was cleaning a certain bakery in Barnsley. Two quid an hour and we were scrubbing hot ovens with caustic chemicals. I hardly had any skin on my hands by the end. And if you so much as stood up to stretch your back, the supervisors would be on you. Same goes for shelf stacking in supermarkets. They'd whip you if they could get away with it. I can hear you all mournfully playing the violin right now.

Nowadays I lounge around in an office, drinking coffee and titting abart with spreadsheets and get paid a fortune (relatively speaking).

Yes, I know it doesn't follow that all well paid workers have an easy life but it's a good general rule. How many managers do you know who sit around in meetings all day, effectively doing nowt? I know plenty.

Nope, the benefits of gaining a degree or two aren't/shouldn't be about money. The benefits are that you are doing interesting and rewarding work.

In short, no... but you would do it in a much better way than I ever could (or could be bothered to so). So, it's just easier, if it's political to refer to your answer. :)

Unless I've misread this entire story ... in which case I'll shut up now and get back to the nationalisation of industry.
