I’m prepared to be patient but they did say they wanted bodies in before they returned to training, that was yesterday and it’s only 5 weeks to the season starting, he can’t be assessing what he’s got first surely.
I know who ur talking about and he’s been training with the team since before pre season so think it’s a matter of if not when when
I keep reading this and I honestly don't get the fascination. He's nearly 34, reasonably injury prone, and the fans of one of our direct rivals for promotion are over the moon that he's left them. Surely if it's an area we're looking at strengthening, we can do much better.
Both Darrell and Mladen have said we're trying to get players in. It sounded more like we're trying to sign players under contract rather than unattached players. Contracted players might have stayed on holiday a little longer than unattached players knowing their future is secure. Jon Russell for example has just returned from Thailand even though he flew out about 6 days after the Bolton game. Then, the selling club first of all have to be willing to sell and the player in question also needs to be open to a move. Teams might be less willing to let players go until they've got a replacement lined up. Then there might be more than one club interested. And all that is to sign 1 player. In an ideal world, we'd have loved to have signed 6 players by now, no doubt. But realistically, that was never going to happen. It's slightly concerning that we've only signed 1, but given that there's over 5 weeks until the season starts, and 9ish until the window closes, there's definitely no reason to panic just yet.
Wouldn’t be against Roberts but it’s the position where we seem to have the most options so if it happens I’d imagine a couple would be on the way out.
Yeah get all that but for a change it would be nice to have players in getting accustomed to surroundings rather than coming out with the usual spiel in September.
My POV is that we have 3 good CBs already but they need extra help guidance. Having someone like Roberts to come on in the latter stages of games to help us manage games better than we did last season will be invaluable. And to be a mentor for lads like Lopata etc. Also helps get fans on side after a toxic ish end to last season, to me that is important too. A happy fan base leads to a better atmosphere and that can help a little. It wont get us promoted on its own but it will help. The fact the fans of Birmingham are happy he is gone is irrelevant too. Most of ours fans seem happy to see Kane go but Hudds fans are delighted.
Exactly. Someone to stop MDG from trying to take a long throw. Only Cotter is any good at that and he’s not a regular
Hardly a ringing endorsement. FLW's Birmingham City fan pundit Mike Gibbs says that while Roberts has performed well when called upon this season, the club should not offer the 33-year-old a new contract. "I think with Marc Roberts, it's a fairly simple one to release him," Mike said. "He's come in and actually had some really good games this year, but I don't think it changes the overall view from my perspective that post the end of the season, I see him moving on. "He's had a turbulent time at Birmingham, he's into his 30s now, he's not the sort of defender that I think Mowbray and the owners want. "What I mean by that is that he's not particularly good with the ball, not a great passer of the ball, he hasn't really got that pace and acceleration to play on the front foot, so you couldn't play a high line with him because he's going to get caught in behind. "I think, for me, I would definitely see him released. "I believe he was on fairly big wages as well when he signed, which is why I was surprised his contract got extended a few weeks ago, so I think it's an absolute no-brainer, new direction to go in." Siriki Dembele RELATED “A luxury player” - Siriki Dembele claim made amid Mark Venus' Birmingham City snub MixCollage-05-Mar-2024-05-28-PM-8037Birmingham City must release Marc Roberts this summer It is difficult to disagree with Mike on this one. Roberts has been a good servant to Birmingham over the years, helping them to Championship survival on a number of occasions, and his experience will be crucial over the coming months as the Blues look to avoid relegation. However, Roberts is no longer first choice at St Andrew's, and as Mike says, he could struggle with the style of play Mowbray is looking to implement. Birmingham are in need of a big rebuild in the summer after an incredibly disappointing season, and it would be the right time to part company with Roberts.
