And if we withdraw a contract offer, would that affect our ability to command a tribunal set transfer fee?

I don't think it does because we've offered it to him but I dont know for sure. I'm pretty sure somebody on here will have the answer.

This is Don we are talking about. You know his new contract will have a £100,000 release clause.

I hate to be the voice of reason, but I would try to reach a compromise with the player. The club wants a resonable length of contract during which time they will hope to prove his fitness and convince potential buyers that he still has ability. In the end, both the club and the player want the same thing. That is that Jacob be transfered to a Premiership team. This applies whether we think Jacob is of that quality or not. In my opinion, in the first part of the season KH picked a formation that allowed Jacob to show his strengths without also highlighting his weaknesses. This has benefitted the team, but has also inflated his value in the open market. Clearly, the club must ask for a two year contract and I do not see why the player would reject this as he knows that BFC can seek a fee from tribunal within that timescale. However, a compromise does not go totally one way and the club must also give up something. They will be very limited what they can do on salary given their attempts to reduce overall salary levels, so I guess the compromise will come on transfer fee. I would guess that we would agree at £1m. As this is considerably more than I think he is worth, I would not be with those supporters would would deride such an arrangement. Jacob and his agent seem to believe he is worth more than that now, so how could they refuse.

I think that you may not have picked up the subtle nuances of contract negotiations.

It is like the situation with Dan Gosling who left Everton I think. They had only made a verbal contract offer and not written so he went to Newcastle on a free, no tribunal. So I guess if we withdraw the offer then we won't get any fee.

Imagine if The Don had made that mistake there would be armed gangs in the streets of Barnsley wanting to string him up!

He's got a contract offer, on the table. The one he rejected before the injury, therefore, we get a fee no matter what. And apparently, he's ****, an arsehole, and not ready for the Prem. So a fee set by a tribunal (lets say 500k) isnt bad for a player that apparently has had "4 months of football.."
    .
I can see why most of you think like you do, because he still hasnt signed the deal. But to make out he's a lovely person, or that he's nowt special, smacks of bitterness just because he hasnt signed...
He's busy with his rehab, and I hear its all going brilliantly, so why cant we just show some patience, and a little bit of appreciation for what he did in the first half of the season? The lad put a red shirt on, wore the armband, and was crippled in our big derby game. Is that not commitment to the cause?
    .
Personally, I too would rather know what he's planning. But deep down I expect him to leave. I understand that its probably annoying for some of you, thinking he's using our treatment, our club, to get fit before leaving us. I get that. But he has a contract until the summer, so he's within his rights tbh. However bad it may appear to us.
Im not defending, or attacking the lad. Just read a lot of the same answers so wanted to flip it a little.
    .
IMO, in an ideal world, he would sign the new contract, get fit and come back just as good next season, and if he is subject to the same offers in January 2013, he can get his move to the Greed League, and, we'd get a decent fee for a change.

yep,i aggree, half a season of decent football and along with a feckin agent now thinks he can play in the top.......he'll be another subs-bench warmer at best if he went to a premiership club..,,then again there are many championship clubs with more money and ambition than us (on paper at least) so in all honesty can you blame him..I just hope that the new financial rules make the game fairer, and in turn help us to hang onto our better players........its a good job we arnt fighting for promotion with players performing like diamonds week in week out cause we'd have no bl*edin team left.
