It's easy to slate Dawson but you've got to realise him & Perkins are up against 3 players in midfield in Watson, McCarthur & McCarthy who passed Man City to death in the cup final 3 months back. Dawson & Perkins were pre-occupied with McCarthy & McCarthur meaning Watson could run the games. Flicker's fault not Dawson's.
But when Dawson got the ball he often wasted it because he's not that good on the ball. It was partly because he had very few options on because we were very flat. The issue was playing two players wide who couldn't get past their full back so we couldn't go forward that way. It was also 2 v 3 in the middle so we couldn't play it through midfield either. That left the only option of going long but because our two central midfield players were too busy trying to cope with McCarthy, McArthur and Watson they never got far enough forward to feed off O'Grady. 4-4-2 relies on pacey wingers which we just don't have.
It was like when we went to man city in the cup. Scared of them and what they could do and gave them far too much respect. Perks and Daws = too negative. Would rather have had mellis in the middle instead of Daws and JOB on the right. Might have had a better go at them.
I think most people respect Dawson as a ard working professional player who gives his all. At the same time you have to accept his weaknesses when in central midfield. A general lack of passing ability and physicality. He works better in a 3 man central midfield if you want to include him. I do think there was an element of worrying to much about the opposition rather than playing to our strengths.
We matched up against the best midfield in the league with 2 against 3 in the centre. It was always going to end in tears. Toure & Barry couldn't deal with them so Dawson & Perkins were never going to. Not Dawson's fault or Perkins just bad tactics on the day from Flitcroft. Whenever we've took a thrashing in the past under him we've bounced straight back & I'd expect the same again
