So, anyone think we have a chance of winning the World Cup?

Yes

I actually thought we were excellent yesterday.

I also thought that Beckham and Owen played well, and that Lennon was ineffectual.

Basically, I'm a fecking idiot.

RE: Not on those 2 performances!

Hopeful;ly against better teams we can raise our game.
Last night's England performance was dreadful.

I'd go with that

with Lennon to come on in 2nd half. desperate to see him have a run at Roberto Carlos.

I'd take anyone running at any of the Plodding Brazilian defenders.

Emerson and Ze Roberto looked way past their best as well.

Maybe Brazil will improve as the tourney goes on.

We are in the 2nd round so of course we have a chance.

Whether we can win it though is a different question - before the tournament started I said we'd go out in the 2nd round and so far I've not seen anything to make me think otherwise.
However, in numerous World Cups, if you look at the 2 finalists you often see teams that didn't look so good in the earlier games. It's about getting through and the team building and growing in confidence as the competition progresses.
England have not played well, but we've qualified with a game to spare (when did that last happen), with 2 wins and no goals conceded….that will breed confidence and hopefully the England team will improve their play and peak at the right time.
In many ways it's like watching Barnsley….struggle against the so-called lesser sides but play better against better opposition and raise the game.

Now that does sound good

Carrick! I forgot was down in the dumps thinking Hargreaves was the only potential holding midfielder.

Gerrard does need to be in the game more with his full blown scouse hat on...curly wig & tash to boot.

Lampard on the bench

so having said that

and i tend to agree with you, do you think we would be better suited to playing against Germany in the Second round rather that ecuador? who has supposed weaker opposition we may struggle to overcome?

RE: so having said that

Not sure really.

On the basis of what I've seen I'd prefer us to play Germany than Ecuador....but playing the Germans on their own soil will not be easy (Munich 2001 excepted).
The team should be looking to go into the 2nd round full of confidence so that means a result against Sweden, they shouldn't be worrying about who they'd be playing in 2nd round and thinking about possibly losing to ensure they get the game they want. Also we wouldn't be as well supported in the stadium against Germany as they would have plenty tickets.

If we finish 2nd in group we would likely put ourselves in position for a meeting with Argentina in quarter finals as well which I wouldn't fancy….still prefer us to win the group and go in that side of the draw.

yes we do

1. this is the group stages and the objective is to qualify: WE HAVE
2. teams have to try and win games in the knockout, as opposed to trying not to lose: BOTH PARAGUAY AND T&T PLAYED DEFENSIVE, TRYING NOT TO LOSE + making if more difficult for us to win
3. we created a host of chances and on another day would have won easily
4. brasil are favourites and i switched their game off it was boring - are we saying thay are not in contention?

Cheer up guys. The tournament starts when the knock-out starts

.. oh you mean England, when I say we I mean Barnsley!

Yeah, course England will win it, I'd bet my mortgage on it.
