I'm inclined to agree with that. The old guard - Lampard, Gerard, Cole, Rooney etc have had more than enough chance and blown it every time. Clean sweep and grow a brand new team ready for the 2018 WC. The 2016 Euros will be a good measure of their progression.
Re: should qualify from that Just remind me how good Scotland are again?? Who are you playing in world up this year? Oh a forgot you'll be watching it on tv won't you!!
I think it's the perfect group for us all to lose interest and curse when we have to suffer another International break. Maybe I'm being just a tad too optimistic there though if you know what I mean...
Re: should qualify from that How was it a problem? Holland didn't slip up. They were never going to. It was pie in the sky. We could have won 82-0 and it would have made no difference. As it was, we comfortably beat them 7-1. The goal we conceded that night didn't cause us any problems at all, it was completely irrelevant, other than for pub quizzes. What caused us a problem was the referee not sending off Ronald Koeman when he Deliberately and cynically brought down David Platt before going on to score a free kick. Koeman: ‘I expected the red card. I turned round and was surprised to see the referee had not sent me off. I was lucky. After the foul I was busy gesticulating that the offence had taken place outside the box to avoid him giving a penalty. But I was able to play an important role later on. I realised the result could have been very different had I been sent off.’ The referee, incidentally, never officiated another international.
San Marino scored straight from the kick-off in what 9 seconds? I think that is what prompts bad memories amongst England fans. People did wonder if that team really deserved to go to the world cup, though the Holland game was the killer.
Re: should qualify from that I never knew that about the ref, glad to hear it though, there was something amiss that night.
