Hi Merde Tete, Thanks for the e-mail and - yes, I do know your Mum ! Will respond also to your e-mail.
You’re getting a bit mixed up there! I was talking about the atmosphere at the Old Show Ground, this being my first ever away game. This was the Third Round and we drew another Second Division side in Bury for a home Fourth Round tie. We despatched them without a need for a replay and THEN we had Man Utd at home for the Fifth Round. I saw all of that cup run.
Clearly I'm getting very mixed up ! I think it may have been you who corrected a previous post of mine by saying Johnny Byrne scored both our goals at The Old Show Ground (which didn't have a blade of grass on it !), when I mistakenly attributed them to Ken Oliver. Thanks for these. I still seem to remember there being a big crowd for the replay. Didn't we beat Bury 1-0 ?
Here's a link to the old show ground. http://www.footballgroundguide.com/old-grounds-and-stands/old-show-ground-scunthorpe/index.html Never got chance to go there before they moved.
The last time I visited the place we beat Scunny 1-0 in the FL Cup 1st Round 1st leg, August 1980. Derrick Parker scored the only goal.
I don't know why I didn't go to that. I was watching the reds and going to the local aways by then. Maybe I'd fallen out with me mates or summat?
2-1 if I remember correctly. In those days we were below both Scunthorpe and Bury as far as league status went so these were excellent results. Man Utd put us in our place though but they did have a few stars on show that day - Best, Law and Charlton were imperious. The big clubs didn’t put their reserve sides out for cup games, hence the big crowds. 38,076 inside Oakwell and my ticket cost 2/6d (12 and a half pence in today’s money)
I loved going on them as a young un. All herded off and walking to the ground singing. Great times. I think it was Rotherham away that the special took us via wakey Kirkgate and on a right trail.
At work during the week in the build up to that match, Rotherham fans were playing down the fact we were on an unbeaten run at the time. Apparently, we hadn't played anyone decent during the run, but we would at Millmoor. They were seriously predicting Ronnie Moore & Rodney Fern would score a bagful against us. Funnily enough, the following week the same people were noticeable by their absence!
All I remember from the game is parker scoring and big Trev going through near the end but not quite managing to get the ball in. It was packed in the away end and we managed to get up against the wall at the front. They were like gods to us young uns.
