So, which third division flop are we going to bring in to replace Butterfield?

True, he had a spell at Wolves as a bairn, well remembered. Went to Italy too didnt he?
Anyroad, I stick by my point, he, Perks and Jimmy were nobodies. Oh, and the latter had a loan spell in the 2nd tier with Scunny

    Perhaps we'll promote from within?

Perhaps the likes of Digby, Taylor, Stones, Noble-Lazarus, Clark or Rose will be able to make the step up? Perhaps we can uncover a modern day Ally Millar, Bobby Doyle or Martin Bullock? Perhaps another Vaz Te type of purchase will sign?
I'm glad I know bugger all about football. It means I don't have to suffer the angst & worries of the more learned fan.

Re: Perhaps we'll promote from within?

With the fair play rules getting closer there may well be a lot of unemployed championship players to choose from.

The players will have to accept that wages will have to start coming down or else squads will be smaller.

Plus we could promote from within, like JLWBL says

We should be ahead of the game with what the club have done this season. If we can break even and survive it will be job well done.

If Butterfield can get a better deal at a premiership club then I say well done Jacob and we move on.

But until the summer comes we won't know.

I don't think we can afford to risk signing players on these long contracts that everyone suddenly wants us to get into.

He's only found his feet under Hill after a proper run in the side and a system built around him. What happens if we give him a 4 year deal, keep Robins and he's stuck on the bench/out wide still?

    I bet you...

A 4 year contract signed say a year and half ago would have cost BFC less than a two year contract at the wage they offered him this time.

Totally speculative now but I'd guess he might have signed a 4 year contract for £1500 a week back then, maybe even less... bet they offered him £5000 a week this time. Hence I'm pretty sure a 4 year contract before someone is 'proven' can be cheaper than say a 2 year one when they're suddenly hot property.

How much do you think a young 'home grown' (ish) player commands salary wise?

The answer is, if you do sign someone (young) up on a 4 year contract (on not that high a wage) and they don't quite meet expectations/hopes, you just sell them on for a small/nominal fee to a club in a lower league.

If we never sign anyone with promise on a longer contract, how are we ever going to make money out of any players - which we need to if we are to have much of a chance to progress?

    Re: I bet you...

But how many players do you offer long term contacts to ?

For every Butterfield there's probably at least three or four that show the same potential at the same age that don't shine.

    Re: I bet you...

I see that mate, but why would he sign a 4 year deal at £1500 a week? Obvious if we offer him a long contract we rate him and reckon he's going to make it - what incentive does he have to sign for cheaper wages?

And we'll start progressing as our reputation for improving players etc continues getting better. We'll be in a better position to negotiate with these lower league players by saying 'here you go, come here and you'll be in the Prem just like Butterfield/Vaz Te etc'. Hopefully, anyway.

He's not the Messiah, he's a very errr decent manager. I still say it's a reciprocal dynamic on this though, a pessimistic manager should expect the sane from fans and players to some extent in return.

    Re: I bet you...

Because at that time he probably would have been on less than that. Put yourself in the position - you're talented but have proven little/nothing yet... you're on (again speculatory) maybe £750-£1000 a week with a year left on your contract. You get offered a four year contract at £1,500 a week (with maybe a clause that if you make x first team appearances during a season the wage goes up to £2,500 a week)... easy choice surely? At that stage you get an injury, have a loss of form etc, and you could end up in non league - the security of such a contract would be daft to turn down.

I'm of course talking in general, but I don't think it's unrealistic. Zaha just signed a 5 year contract at Palace despite knowing he could get a move to the Premier League.

    Surely

You don't have a one policy fits all kind of situation. You offer long contracts to the good players but don't to the average ones. Everything is a gamble to some extent but we don't take any risks at all and consequently end up with **** all.

Surely a club with an £11 million pound turnover has got someone within the ranks who is prepared to stick their neck out and say that a particular individual is going to be a good player when they're about 19.

I saw it in Butterfield 2 years ago. I haven't seen it in any other of our youngsters at Barnsley since Chris Morgan. If I can see it then someone who works in the profession damn well should be able to.

I don't mean any disrespect Dave but all it sounds like you and Dyson are doing is making excuses for incompetence rather than giving valid reasons.
