So, which third division flop are we going to bring in to replace Butterfield?

some said he would make it at 16 and were told they didnt know what they were on about.

it doesnt matter if hes a long term contract or not.

If Jacob wanted to leave he would leave. Rooney almost forced himself out of manchester with 1 1/2 or more left.

    Re: Surely

I don't think it's incompetence, I just think it's understandable considering the situation.

Butterfield's played under 3 different managers for us, and agreed he's always looked like he had something. Maybe if Robins stays in the Summer, we offer Butterfield a new contract then. But with all the management changes, guaranteed compo and small budget etc we've not taken the risks that we maybe could've from a contract perspective.

Not saying it's right, but I can understand it.

If he is on a long term contract he cannot leave unless the club accepts an offer for him irrespective of if he wants to play for the club or not.

    Re: Surely

I still don't think I would have offered Jacob a contract, even though he had undoubted skill I thought he may never have achieved the stamina and application to be a top flight footballer. But I'm just a lay person and not in the profession.

It's all about opinions Jay and I can see the validity of your point. I don't think I am making excuses particularly I just have an alternate view. My views tend to be very pessimistic about 'risk' when it comes to the clubs finance, I'm a afraid it comes from my day job !

As for disrespect ? none taken in the slightest. It's good to have a proper debate. If I post an opinion on here I like for that opinion to be challenged and analysed in a structured debate.

    Re: Surely

The fact is Butterfield is still a prospect. Hes still young. He has only played just over 50 games in the championship and many of these as sub. Time will tell whether he will become a quality premier or even championship player season after season. At this time he is still a prospect. I do agree that longer contract would perhaps have been a good move, but remember a contract is something between two parties and we dont know if we would have offered a 5, 10, 20 year contract whether the agent (and the player would accept)

Keith Hill has complained about how much we got for Vaz Te. So where does that leave us?

    Re: I bet you...

I have to be honest - I think there are very, very few examples of 4-5 year contracts being signed at this level of football. Zaha is an exception rather than a rule. Butterfield isn't a Barnsley fan and I strongly doubt he would have committed himself to us for 4 years. He has been very confident in his own ability to play at the highest level since a very young age, and I personally don't see any way that he would have signed such a long term deal with us if he is as confident as he seems to be, and as confident as people who know him suggest he is.

    We'll never know though, unfortunately.

    He may not have done

That is out of the club's control. But isn't the point that we should have offered him one. Isn't the problem here that we didn't even try?

Re: He may not have done

Its probably safe to assume that we didn't try, but criticising the club for something that they may well have attempted seems a bit harsh. Butterfield and his representatives probably laughed them out of the room - lets not forget it took the club a hell of a long time to show any faith in him whatsoever.

Re: He may not have done

Aside from anything else, based on our negotiating history we'll probably get more from the tribunal than we would ever have got from negotiating with a club. We seem like the softest touch in the football league.

How would you make him stay then?

Because it wuld seem that you think it is wholly the clubs fault he is leaving, then it must be possible for the club to mae him stay.

So, how do they do it?

Well, we don't now. We're in a situation where we can't compete financially, so the only thing we can do, is learn our lesson (which we won't).
