RE: Well..........

They pay income tax and NI on what they earn.

The point here is the Govt bangs the drum about what it spends on the NHS. get down to the front line where the NHS actually pays for the services it procures, and it's not such a black and white issue.

I don't know what Dentists get paid from the NHS, but who in their right mind is going to work for less money ?

You're right. Which is why I'd like to see them forced to cover the demand for NHS work. It's still a decent living.

I must have been NHS then as that 15.50 is about the price I pay for a check up

Like owt else, if te govt want them to do it, they'll have to pay. Unless they actually create a seperate NHS dentis network.

    RE: Well..........

I suppose, having already sneaked out of much of the expense of providing affordable dental care, they'd see that as a backward step.

It'd be good to see a wave of NHS-only dental clinics opening all over the country and forcing them to take the responsibility again. I know there's only so much cash to go round but I think making the public cough up for dental care is very *****.

    My Dentist has gone private

And the price of a checkup has jumped to £35 - not bad for 10 mins work.
They did offer me an inusrance for a mere £120 per year to cover 2 checkups + remedial work (but not hygenist visits (£40 a go)

Other things seem to have gone up between 200 and 500% as well. Its annoying as we were NHS and they just told us all they werent doing that any more.

so I am now looking for a new Dentist, especially as I have no confidence in dentist as my original nice one retired.

Haven't been to the dentist's for 15 years

Saved me a fortune. I'll just have the lot out in a few years and buy myself a liquidiser with the money I've saved.

    what i dont understand is.

when i was at school in the 60s i used to go for check ups every 4 months and i needed loads of fillings which my dentist used to do without anesthetic he really made me suffer the cruel *******. so when i started work i told him to ****** as i wasnt putting up with all that pain again. i never went to a dentist for 17 years then when i decided to have my teeth checked the dentist told me they where fine.
so that means when my adult teeth where only about 2 or 3 years old and had regular dental treatment they needed all them fillings but then after 17 years of not going to a dentist my teeth didnt need any fillings. i think all them fillings when i was at school must have been unneccessary and a easy way for a dentist to make a fortune.
