    He's signed a 5 year contract too.

    Unbelieavable!

How long can he last? Not 5 years in my opinion.

Unless he's taken some kind of coaching role on too? (dunno)

    3 years playing - 2 coaching.

    Risk is comparative

If you have a pound and you decide to punt 90 pence on an investment that may reap you ten quid - the likelihood of success is so-so, but you're keen to make something rather than stand still - then you are left with the possibility of being left with only ten pence. Fair enough - you're either brave or foolish (depending upon the investment). Still not sure you deserve to succeed though. That being said - there is (for some) something to admire in that.

If comparatively, someone comes along and backs you by throwing £100 at you - and they have plenty more where that came from, so the actual risk is fairly low, and the chances of success are extremely high - how is that something people can admire? It's simple and straightforward. It's not a risk, it's a straightforward transaction. You 'buy' success. Nothing to admire in that.

If I had a billion and walked into Barnsley F.C. and bought all the best players I could attract on top dollar we'd piss this division. Sure, we'd be happy, but the other teams that are competing and having to balance the books and weather some financially precarious times would look across (with justification) and accuse us of buying our way out of trouble. It's morally dubious, it's not sportsman like, and it threatens the fabric of the sport because it undermines the integrity of the game.

How you can see something in it to marvel at I just do not know.

So he turned down Aston Villa, Ajax, Hull, Newcastle...

AEK Athens, Basle and 'several' teams in Turkey to join Notts County?

    Rather him than me :D.

RE: So he turned down Aston Villa, Ajax, Hull, Newcastle...

It will extend his playing career quite significantly you would have thought - so not only will he be able to earn the £3 million a year, he'll be able to earn it for much longer. The stress of playing in the top flight could have him out of the game in one or two years.

That being said I'd be on that plane to Greece personally. "Cheerio England I'm going to end my playing days in the sun".
