errrm wrong sir..

Pension later in life - wrong. Someone else must have got mine.Vast majority volunteered - I only ever met one volunteer and he was from Bermuda. Sense of pride and duty - wrong. Dragged into the forces when most would have liked to stay at home. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was in the Barnsley Air Cadets and when I went to Cherry Street, Sheffield, for my medical, I was given the choice of three "services" Marines, Mines or Navy.

    What I would say

Is that there are many professions that deserve far more than they get, nurses are a prime example.

Not paying tax is not how I'd go about it....how about paying a better salary to start with so the tax wasn't as much of an issue.

The government have done this because the British soldiers are side by side with the American forces and found that they aren't paying tax.

A Squaddie in Afghanistan earns now about

£2.40 an hour taking into consideration the pittance they pay for being overseas on active duties at the moment, this is just taking each day as 12 working hours, which anyone that has ever been in the situation knows does not happen.

A majority of the major nations suspend tax for servicmen serving in hot zones, many get a day off for every day served on their return.

OK we all knew what we were doing when we signed up but for Christs sake when a young lad at McDonalds can earn more things need rethinking, I am trying very hard here to use facts and not feelings like Dragon but you lot of mamby pamby self rightous arsehol;es need to spend 24 hours make that 12 in the conditions these lads and lasses find themselves in. then please by all means come on here and spout your rhetoric but remember for those 12 hours you need to have spent 2 months wages on kit capable of keeping you safe and warm and in a modicum of comfort as MOD won't supply them for you.

What a load of utter tossers

And remember Chef and Eaststander the big thing for you is

While ever they volunteer to do this YOU and YOURS won't have to, without them there would have to be some sort of conscription. And you begrudge them tax benefits. God Almighty.......

Personally I think that the people who work in the armed forced bear an incredible responsibility that will generally push them to the boundaries human endurance (often psychologically, if not physically in certain branches) when they serve in places like Iraq and Afganistan.

When they go and do their work they should be properly (properly) quipped, deployed in adequate numbers, and renumerated in terms which reflects the risks they take for our country. If they get a tax break for being over there - good. Good for them. This country wastes more money on red tape and administration.

So your point is, You would never fight for your country but those that do

Should get poor wages poor equipment poor conditions poor backup to do a difficult and sometimes impossible job.

All down to opinions, you have yours and have spouted them often enough as I have mine for what it is worth............ they deserve every penny they can screw out of a government who has used them as pawns since time began.

And anyone who would not stand up for his country, his family friends and neigbours when the time came which is really what you have said,,,, well i won't go there but your attitude is **** it i like my way of life but let someone else fight for me to keep it. and please,,,, put up any argument you want that is the bottom line,,,,,,,,,,,,, you get what you get now because people have in the past are doing now and will in the future fight so you can have the life you have.

    no mate.

    these are my points.

I personally do not agree when soldiers demand extra benefits / tax breaks etc because they are fighting. Like the chap who is attempting to avoid paying his council tax because he is fighting for his country. It is my opinion that he made an informed choice when he signed up to fight for his country and should stick by that decision. For what it's worth I also think that they are vastly underpaid for the job that they do.

My second point is in isolation. I would not fight for my country, strictly down to my personal beliefs about violence.

I shouldn't have posted the original thing because it's clearly a very subjective area fraught with emotions. Sorry if i have caused offence, but I stick to my opinion.

and so they should. Our Forces should get the same pay as the Yanks when on active service and the best kit available.

Who would put their life on the line for £2.50 an hour certainly not Draft dodger Bush and his side kick Blair.

    I agree wi thi baz

And I have no service connections

Its nothing short of scandalous how serviceman are treated - both former and current. We owe them everything.

Mindsthi I'm a bit peeved that senior officers are getting the same pro rata deal - in other words more money for less risk.

and coppers well thats another matter..

    the officers....well....

the officers are sent to the front by the Air force so as such they get a lot of risk when flying....the Navy are on the same ship. Army officers are very often at the front too.
