A boat trip along the Amalfi coast for stunning scenery. Pompeii for the sheer scale but you wont get to see everything Some prefer Herculeneum because its smaller and better preserved.
I was amazed by the colour of the sea when we went on a boat trip in Capri. Very clear and greeny/ blue. An everlasting memory of Sorrento for me, was the smell of lemons which is not surprising when you can see them growing wild on the trees that line the roads.
Yes, I actually went back in '91, I think it was last holiday with my ex wife. We had a fortnight over there & it is an amazing place. I never bothered with Naples, but if I were going again i'd check out some of the architecture there, although as a city it is a bit of a **** hole by all accounts. I made the mistake of buying an AC Milan shirt whilst in Sorrento. AC were the biggest Italian team at the time and foreign shirts were hard to find at the time. It was my only clean article on the way back & got treated like **** at Naples airport!
Love Italy, we do a city break there every year. Been to Milan a couple of times, Rome twice, Florence and Turin, hoping to get to Venice this winter and hire a motor home next year to do all the east coast.
Not been to Turin, but done all the rest. I played a wedding in Florence 2 years ago in a castle in the mountains & an after party in a chateau up there the following day. A great country for food, wine, history & the sunshine.
I loved Naples. Home of Pizza, you can find beautiful traditional pizzerias with the best pizza in the world. When I went it was late in the year and there were street markets and street parties where neighbourhoods gathered to eat absolutely gigantic cakes which they shared with anyone passing through. It's got proper soul that city.
There was a Liverpool fan on our coach and he was wearing their latest Club shirt. We were passing the San Siro when he suddenly stood up shouting " Liverpool, Liverpool, Liverpool". My missus was having a nap and nearly jumped out of her skin.
Their ice cream and coffee are pretty special as well SD. My favourite coffee brands are Lavazza and Illy. Always have an Illy Cappucino when we go to the Thyme Bistro at Cannon Hall Garden Centre. It's great.
Yep, I'm with you there! There are some great delis as well. That's what I liked about the place, it's a great authentic Italian city for eating and drinking. It's not picturesque compared to its stunning surroundings. It has a weird topography that makes it very hard to get a sea view anywhere in the city. But walk around the tight city lanes in the evening outside of summer and it can be very atmospheric
My favourite city in Italy is Rome however , nothing compares, which didn't go down well with the Neopolitan taxi driver with a picture of Diego Maradona hanging next to his crucifix. 'Why do you like Roma? It's just a load of dead old statues!'. This is the real life in Italy!'
It's a long time since I was there but I can well believe it. Not like you can just hop in the car and drive to the next village for your lunch.
