If you like Window Phone 8 though the best bargain is the Samsung Ativ S which is the Windows Phone version of the Samsung Galaxy S3, you can get it for 180 euros from Amazon Germany which with delivery and taxes will be about £160-£165 (compared to £300 for the S3) and you still get the two year Samsung European warranty.

Being in contact = basic phone requirement, not a smart phone. Seriously Fi, I just went to a presentation about teenagers and social media use, and it is really, really frightening what can happen. Apart from the diminishing basic social skills that comes from interacting electronically as opposed to verbal communication, and the constant distraction of having one, smart phones are the number one cause of online bullying in teens that in the more serious cases have ended tragically as you will be aware. Tell my nieces that they do not need smart phones. And that it is because you love them that you will not let them have one.

Furthermore, from a legal standpoint, those phone contracts go in your name. Should one of the girls be sent an inappropriate image / picture from a male classmate, for example, and they open it, you (the parent) can be charged with downloading child porn, and there are serious consequences. Think about it. Keep it simple for their own protection. If they want to keep in touch with you (and vice versa), all they need is a basic phone. It likely won't get nicked either! And tell them their aunty wants them to stay safe!

It is if they ever answer the damned things. It does make you wonder how we ever managed without them.

    Absolutely. Couldn't agree more.

I work in the mobile phone industry and frankly I see smart phones as a license to print money. I have an old Nokia 3100 and a newish Samsung GT-E1230 that cost me a fiver. Both simply make/receive calls and SMSs (not even MMS) and even my company phone is on PAYG. I can't see why kids need more than that from a safety perspective, in fact as their Auntie says the better the phone the more risk it probably puts them in.
